Re: Checking the forestay tension

Unless im incorrect in my assumption i dont think your upper and lower side stay tension can be correct without the front also being tight enough... buy a loose guage ...im not sure if i spelled that right but i got one about two years and set mine for 300 upper and lower after i bent two different ...

Re: Florida keys mid July

Yeah bully netting is the way to go....super easy and a lot of fun...we paid i think about 150 bux for 3 lights mounted easily on pvc pipe and we attach it to the dinghy just basically laying a 2x12 across the front of the dinghy and lashing the board down with rope... i steal one of my house batter...

Re: Florida keys mid July

Or if anyone is seriously considering a trip to the dry tortugas i may consider changing plans to mix things up a bit....if dry tortugas though i need enough time to order a desalinator online and a couple other things as its a bit more off beaten path with no gas or water

Re: any mods / suggestions for reducing heel in a 26x?

3rd on clinometer ...once my kids seen that it usually only goes over to 30 (in a puff) then settles back down to 15 to 20 they actually started to enjoy the 30s when they'd hit to spice things up a bit....i think if you did any serious mods to make it heel less the standing rigging wont hold up.......

Re: Ruddercraft foil vs

Ive got jo woodworks rudders as well and ive had mine out in the keys in some nasty squalls... my boat still rounded up but its cause it heeled over 45 degrees ish which is what the boat is intended to do...i never noticed a handling difference in mine but its maybe because i had mine cut exactly to...

Re: Swing Keel rope replacement

If possible i would just wait till summer and do it while the boat is in the water..... blue water yachts will sell you the rope at twice the length which makes it easier so you can surface to tie a clean knot then pull it tight and trim off the excess If its already broke use a tent pole to shove t...

Re: Last Sail of Season - Rudder Pivot Bolt Failure

Glassing the wooden rudders isnt necesssy but if you have wood rudders the maker said to sand and varnish once per year depending on how much it gets used...mine are also white oak rudders but i only took mine out once this year for the trip to the keys so ill prob wait 2 years since lately ive been...

Re: Last Sail of Season - Rudder Pivot Bolt Failure

An x is easy to upgrade rudders and entire assembly ive never looked at the inside of an M to see if there was an easier way yo do it but id imagine the most cost effective way to still have a much sturdier assembly is the wood rudders from jowoodworks at 180 a piece as far as the brackets id take t...

Re: Last Sail of Season - Rudder Pivot Bolt Failure

I dont know what is possible in an m boat because of how the brackets bolt through the hull and if a backing plate can be made to attach to the outboards bolts or not ...in an X its not that hard to do because of how the rudders just hang off the back and are not recessed under the boat...in an ex a...

Re: Last Sail of Season - Rudder Pivot Bolt Failure

Emergency rudder = drogue...there was speculation wether it would work or not but i tested it out this last year and worked great steered very easily with boards up ....that was using a fiorentino shark drogue smallest size

Re: Last Sail of Season - Rudder Pivot Bolt Failure

And boat the issue of the rudder posts arent a difficult issue to fix....the bolts are long enough to attach backing plates that run the length to the outboard bolts on the inside. You are right that its a 3 part problem and in my opinion the weakest area is the bracket then the rudder the 2nd and l...

Re: Last Sail of Season - Rudder Pivot Bolt Failure

Notice the flare at the bottom.....that is what causes the bolt to break or rudder to break....its the bracket flaring first and now its not supported....im not sure how to fix that on an M model if i had to guess i would just guess to take the bracketa off and have much thicker 3x the thickness sta...

Re: Last Sail of Season - Rudder Pivot Bolt Failure

Lxneigh if you got any pics of what you did with your brackets could you post them....i went with a quick fix of having 1/4 inch section of stainless pipe welded at the bottom corners so i could use clamp style vice grips to keep it from bending and flaring but id rather have a better way of doing i...
