Re: Mission bay to San Diego bay and back in a day.

I motored from Mission bay then sailed all the way to Imperial Beach marine reserve. I came across a group of kayakers who warned me too look out! I said, I know it's only 2' deep. It's a Macgregor! 8) I had my rudders kicked up and the swing keel barely in the water making 4kts. They were amazed. ...

Re: Bending the mast

My mainsail is a bit saggy from the luff to the chord. It is not luffing, just a bit untaught on a close reach. It is a new sail, so this should be a matter of tuning the rig. I think I need to put a little bend in the mast to pull the belly forward and flatten it. Is the best approach to tighten t...

Re: Mission bay to San Diego bay and back in a day.

Boat, Yes, have seen alligators in the marinas and in the Industrial Canal where I keep the boat. Went up a Bayou in Mandeville, seeing gators and many turtles, hit a submerged log and needed to turn the boat around. Asked the wife to jump in and push it around, she said no way! with those gators :o...

Re: Mission bay to San Diego bay and back in a day.

Yes, Boat, I sail Nawlins every year, have sailed across the shortest distance of L. Pontchartrain @13 miles and back in a day. Also sailed on Lake Borne. They are rebuilding the marina by Lakefront causeway, should be nice this year. There is usually great wind for sailing but lots of lightening bo...

Re: Discussion about Traveller's, Heel, and something I am confused about

I built a traveler over the cockpit on my X and yes I think it is a great control and would not want to be without it. However, moving the mainsheet further away from the pedestal makes it more difficult to adjust or let off in a gust.

Re: Mission bay to San Diego bay and back in a day.

Yes, you can anchor in Glorietta for free, but need to register online. I know of 2 boats that are registered there the 14th and 15th for race I mentioned. This will be my last race until later in the year, since we leave for NOLA about the 20th of Feb. Sure would like to see you bring Boat to the r...

Re: 26X forestay length

I have the same problem as vulcan98. I have shortened my turnbuckle where it bottoms out, but I have not had a chance to set up the mast yet (boat under cover for winter). It looks like I was able to shorten the forestay by about 3 inches. Not sure what degrees it will be, I'm hoping for 92 to 94. ...

Re: 26X forestay length

Vulcan98, "I am at 94 degrees and head stay good and tight. Liked to have gotten 90 to 92 degrees but then I would need head stay shortened. Thanks tomfoolery for the reply." Do you have any update on performance changes by moving from 96 to 94? I just dropped my mast back from 90 to ?? but @7" at d...

Re: Mission bay to San Diego bay and back in a day.

Boat, Now I know that Pepperpark is near Pier 32 my boat is just a mile further South. You don't need to purchase a mooring permit. There is a free anchorage at Glorietta Bay, which is just south and west of the bridge. Call 619 686-6227, the location is: A-5 Glorietta Bay - 32 degrees 40 minutes 71...

Re: Mission bay to San Diego bay and back in a day.

I can't get past the Mission Bay bridge so I only got to beach it a little in Bonita Cove - but it's a long sail back to Oceanside so I had to leave pretty quick. Try the upgraded Shelter Island Launch Ramp or come down to Chula Vista J Street ramp next time. We could get some pics to share of each...

Re: Mission bay to San Diego bay and back in a day.

No map, but the Ketch floated off the mud the same day. He was about 100yds further South of the ketch that became a total loss last year. :(

Re: Better Pointing into the Wind

I have used duel mainsheets, now use cabin top traveler, reinforced boom and 8:1 vang to control the main. My main is a Judy B, Hyde, well built sail, loose footed with a 4:1 outhaul, I can move boom windward of center with my traveler. I have also tried changing the angle of the genny by pulling in...

Re: Better Pointing into the Wind

I just found this discussion and the new site. The X and M are very different in their mast setup. I am particularly interested in hearing if mast rake adjustments are found to make a difference. Do any of you captains see tack angles approaching 45 degrees going hard to wind? I have never found the...

Did you notice if that Ketch was still stuck in the flats by the car pier in South Bay?

Re: Just Rambling....

Great post, braggers set the standards.

I think the mod I appreciate the most was shortening the spreaders. Started using the lifting system last year but since I have been sailing in 2 bodies of water that's only 2 up and downs a year. I'm 76, dang the X is getting old.
