Re: replacing emergency brake cable
I know our local West Marine store has a swaging tool for do it yourself rigging. Their catalog says they sell wire rope down to 1/16" diameter which ought to be perfect for your replacement breakaway cable.

Re: Check your tyres (tires)
Perspective? You won't save enough gas in 100,000 miles by washing your car to pay for the first wash job. You might save enough to pay for the water bill you'll incur if you wash it yourself, but not enough for the soap, rags, and wax, let alone the time spent. Wash your car because it looks better...

Re: Getting an X off the trailer
By spring hangers, do you mean the two vertical straps welded to the frame and drilled for the sping eye bolts? Better than an explanation would be a photo or drawing. The engineer in me says there is a temp fix which would allow you to tow it far enough to be fixed, but I need to know exactly what ...

Re: Check your tyres (tires)
Now, admittedly, in a car this advantage is hardly noticeable, but on an aircraft moving at +500mph it makes a difference that pays off in hard cash. You're missing the point while also valildating the point. Of course the statement is true, it's just that the difference in automotive gas mileage i...

Re: anyone adapted aluminum M trailer to the X?
The shape of the hull is slightly different but modifying the M bunks to match the X hull ought to be fairly straightforward exercise; certainly eaiser than trying to duplicate the trailer from scratch which many have done. The issue for most of us has always been that the cost of shipping the trail...

Re: Evinrude 60 Etec
The original claim was that the 60HP ETEC motor was factory installed. Unless things have changed when I wan't looking, there has never been any such thing as a factory installed motor of any HP on a Mac. All motors are dealer installed. The Mac factory website price list does not list any motor as ...

Re: Batteries
Wow! Don't run your batteries in series, ever. That will give you 24 volts. It will certainly fry your lights, possibly your electronics, pumps, maybe your engine computer, starter and alternator as well. Marine "starter" batteries are designed to provide big Marine Cranking Amps needed to start big...

Re: Opinions on Idasailor rudders for 26X
I would be wary of this mod as pictured. From an engineering perspective, you have seriously weakened the rudder structure right at the point of maximum stress, which is just below the exit of the bracket. On successive trips of the Conch Cruisers in '03, '04 and '05, I saw three Idasailor rudders f...

Re: Check your tyres (tires)
The nitrogen in the tires thing has been making the rounds for some years. I believe the claims of benefits are nothing more than marketing hype to get people to buy something they don't need. I would have said to separate fools from their money, but that would be unkind to those who have already bo...

Re: Rated towing capacity
I believe Frank's statement comes under the heading of "Yes, but..." If, while towing your Mac with a Yugo, the trailer rolls over onto and totals a $200K Classic Rolls, they may still pay off, but I believe they could still come after you and you might expect to hear from the insurance company's la...

Re: Port-a-potty mod needed
I have a setup similar to Tam's. 40 gallon Plastimo under the forward dinette seat (Mac X). Pressure demand pump with no accumulator. Standard hot/cold bar sink faucet at the galley, standard kitchen faucet pushbutton sprayer only (no faucet) in the head. Both bought at Home Depot for a fraction of ...

I would be careful not to underestimate the importance of how much additional heel you get from raising the boom 7”. It has nothing to do with whether or not you raise the top of the mast. Raise the boom 7”, the center of effort is raised 7”, period. A few degrees of heel is the difference between m...

Very important update
Unless it's changed (haven't been there since fall '07), a major portion of the staging area and the main parking lot is on the wrong side of a set of low powerlines; very easy to not notice if you aren't paying attention; also very easy to hit with your mast. You must rig the mast at one of the sta...
