Shelby OEM 2002 trailer winch refurb, abject failure..

Post by Catigale » Wed Jun 24, 2020 2:21 am

I am going over the whole trailer with driveway time during Covid. I have a new extended box tongue from a failure in 2017, and need to redo beds, brake lines, hold downs , lights

All going well, and then thought I would take off the OEM Shelby winch and scrape, Paint with Hammerite

Look the court jester I decided to remove the 9/16 head nut and bolt that makes up the winch spool axle.

The nut came off fine , the bolt head snapped.

5 cycles of heat, drill out to bushes, holy water, a soak in atf acetone....the shaft is still frozen.

I tried pressing it out and it just bent the spool wing.

Shelby is out of business so I can’t buy the part,

I did manage to find a HF strap winch which fits perfectly so no boating time lost.

Advice: don’t mess with that axle bolt unless you can see it moving.

Ona nicer note, I finally managed to drill the needed drain hole for the winch angle iron !

You should work for the company we rent our fabrication buildings from. They're an old-school steel fabricator from way back-when (they fabbed and erected the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge,* for instance), and their guys will spend a week trying to rebuild a $50 part for an old overhead crane. For instance. :D

*For those not from the NYC area, that's the suspension bridge the dudes in the movie Saturday Night Fever were monkeying around on.

I got all the big hardware 7/8 hopelessly rusted off steel from the trailer with my Dremel and replaced with galvanized or stainless - using plenty of no seize...only to be beaten by a 9/16 in two bushings.....its the principle...

:D :D :D

I have about 10x more in time invested than the replacement cost, thanks for playing!

:D :D :D

Looking for a job in machinery maintenance? I know a company that's hiring, though they're just as cheap with their employees as they are with the machinery those employees 'maintain'. :D

On a brighter note, I just won the battle with the last of the 7/8 inch bolts on the 2002 steel trailer and got the rusty goal posts and fenders off

The last one took an hour with Dremel and chisel to reach Nirvana

Im replacing with plastic fenders and also clamp on goalposts so taking crap off just means dremeling a 1/4 inch SS clamp at worst - about 20 seconds of work.

Stephen,
Which Dremel do you have that an hour of work didn’t burn out the motor? I have a Dremel 4200; I have sent it back for repairs once already.

Ah Dremel Sensei is in touch with his tool :| and operates it for 3-5 minutes then let’s cool. Also keep you hands away from the cooling intakes.

Gloves and face shield too.

I was using the corded 3000 or 4000 model

But, what a beautiful location to do the nasty work in! At least you could look up and see that view from time to time.

From the pics, it looks like one of those jobs where you invent new words and phrases... :?

Way to hang in there!

I went the other way a couple of months ago. Bought a replacement winch at West Marine. Ultimately had to drill one new hole because the mounting base plate hole options did not quite line up with existing two holes. Then the crank handle that came with the winch was 8 inch shaft and that hit the driver side V bar. Bummer. West Marine went back to the manufacturer and got me a 6 inch handle. Had to pay for that, but now all is fine. Point is that going all new is not without glitches either. Poseidon extracts his dues one way or another. If you go the POR15 route on the frame, let me know. Been there and have the really grimy T-shirt to prove it!
