Sorry we didn't get everyone who showed up, but I think you'll agree, that between all of our pictures, a marvelous time was had by all!

OMG! Lake Flies.
Did anyone get these on the way home? We were about mid lake when we started to get hit on by annoying biting flies. First I tried Deep Woods Off which usually works fine with mozzies and no-see-ums, but they seemed to be mostly immune. Then we noticed the cabin beginning to gain a population, as well as the engine well. I got out the big guns, namely - 'Raid' (good for cancer after 3 applications) and gave a good fogging, which Gabe actually let me do without her usual vociferous complaints (I'm an old Deet guy). We sailed on, still accumulating more of the little devils until the can had to come out again! The biting was beginning to reach epidemic proportions and the boat had a ridiculous number on board by then! The third desperate spraying seemed to turn the corner and we continued to sail on, where at this point we had actually prepared to run at high speed with the engine in order to blow them off the boat. The flies had the last say, however.
Before we could spend the final night on the boat (in Jordan Harbour), we had to remove hundreds of dead'ns off the bedding, flooring, seating, and everywhere else that had presented a decent place to expire on. The house vac is coming down with us tomorrow to suck out the several dozens of stragglers that were missed. Gross!
Do it again next year?
Absolutely!

I've heard many tales of the biting flies on Ontario but have never experienced them...sailed it for about 20 years now...
Dies anyone know the genus and species? Can some one mail me some corpses?

Yipes Crikey!
Looking at your posting is making me scratch!
I remember seeing cases and cases full of entomologist-mounted local dipteran specimens. I decided to just refer to them as dipterans from then on.
Actually I've not seen those ones up close, so I dunno. But I'd like to know too.

Nasty stuff
I did not get any on my boat
Leon had a couple bites here and there
I have never seen so many bugs in one place
You must have picked up a swarm that followed you home
Perhaps it was the blood alcohol level they sensed
Drives them crazy

Hey Leon! Coming back next year?
Geoff, how bout booking for the Shuffle timing, in advance (March?), for next year? I'd be willing to come down for the line-up when they give them out. I talked to one of the attendants, who said it might be possible to raft a third between two docks, in our case. Just have to do some early math, and work out booking repayments.
