afordable wind systems

Post by 1st Sail » Tue Feb 12, 2019 12:17 am

Practical sailor just had a post on the Calypso wind system. Definitely affordable for an X with fixed mast.

they just released a ultrasonic:

I'm keep watching the prices fall. Tack Tick is down to under 1K$ for the system, and under 600$ for the mast sensor.

Tack Tick wireless solar powered flux gate compass for rotating mast.

Tack Tick was over $2K a few years ago

SailTimer appears to be improving with Bluetooth 4.0. (supports rotating masts). They are also paying for favorable testimonials with a $50 credit on their web site currently. Maybe they have it right finally. $550 for the latest version.

Both the Calypso and SailTimer talk to IOS and Android phone and tablets via BT 4.0. Calpso has a Bt to Nmea 0183 transducer for under $200.

So I'm getting close to adding a wind system.

Here is another affordable system. Looks like there are a number of supplier/mfg using open source NMEA 0183. Also network servers for NMEA 0183 and 2000 have dropped in price significantly. X owners with a fixed mast can get it done for less than $500.

Was looking into a Nasa wind seems to be the most affordable and easiest to connect. The wired version is even cheaper. I want to see the wind info on the Raymarine MFD chart plotter rather than a separate APP. Only drawback is the rotating mast but I think I could just figure how many degrees its off when the mast is rotated.

Made in France the CV7 ultrasonic with a windy plug that connects to NMEA 2000.
But I found it difficult of where to buy only rainwise.com and did not see the windy plug on their website.
