attaching a skeg?

Post by Brian-Up-North » Tue May 28, 2019 6:03 am

In the former mods section of the board there were some good examples where skegs had been attached to the last few feet of a mac just beyond the last bunk in the trailer.

Does anyone have advice / photos on the optimum thickness (1/4 inch?)/ shape for a skeg and how to attach ?

I assume west marine products/ but advice on which products would be appreciated.

I am hoping a skeg will improve tracking while docking and putting the mac on a trailer.

Thanks

West System Instructions are good, and customer service is better than good.

https://www.westsystem.com/instruction-2/

I'm sceptical about how much a skeg will help with low speed maneuvering, there just isn't enough water flow at low speeds to stabilize the boat at docking and loading speeds. Better used for making turns at speed.

The above is an opinion not based on empirical research, just messing around on boats :)

I did a long post on this subject after we put a 6“ x 42“ long Skeg on the aft of the boat. I no longer have to drop the swing keel to enter a dock slip. And loading the 26X on the trailer even with a cross wind is easy. The ray marine wheel pilot works even with no rudders. On this loop trip we have traveled from Tampa Fl. To Poughkeepsie N.Y. about 1600 miles most of the time with the autopilot. If you have ever tried to load an X with no rudders you will not believe how easy it is to power the boat on a trailer. We left a detailed mod under the mod section I cannot seem to get to the mod section at this time. Check my post on this subject for more info.

ris do you have pick of your mod showing the skeg?
Unfortunately, the mod section of the board seems to be down (for some time)

Heath is aware of the problem with the Mods section and will be working to brig it back up. Time frame unknown.

Does anyone have an opinion on one skeg vs two.

Is two better than one in terms of performance?

One would certainly be easier to install?

Yea I still stand by this installation and would do it again on a new boat right away. I’d angle them just a bit off the centerline of the boat though. Just a few degrees. And do a much better job shaping them.

Will a skeg help track when motoring?

At anything above 7 knots, my X tracks like a sheet of plywood. It wants to go left or right, but never straight ahead.

Scares the Jesoosi Kristoosi out of oncoming boats.
