What line do you use for MRS?

Post by DaveC426913 » Sat Jun 27, 2020 4:26 pm

I used to go for the 4:1 boom vang, but have started using the 4:1 mainsheet because it has a very convenient built-in cleat to hold the mast where I want it while I run back to disentangle shrouds n such.

Then one day, in the middle of the season, I decided the main sheet was far longer than it needed to be, and just piled up in the bucket. So I set the sail out to full broad reach, gave it a few extra feet, and cut off the rest - maybe 12 feet or so.

Flash forward to end-of-season, and I used the mainsheet line to lower the mast - until it got down to about 30 degrees - and I ran out of line. Slipped right through my fingers, and the mast whammed down on my bimini frame.

Oops.

I use a dedicated 5:1 setup with larger ball bearing blocks, and the rope clutch on the cabin roof that’s used for the main sheet.

With a stopper knot in the end, just in case.

I let my 6 foot college athlete lower my mast with a dock line, usually with one hand while she talks on the phone
