Fellow Mac'ers,

I have some holes in the back of my I am hoping one of you smart guys can help me figure out what it is.

One hole above each rudder...about 1 inch above the hinge. Probably a little smaller than the diameter of a pencil. They are exactly the same on both sides.

I am guessing they have something to do with the rudders but am not sure if these are normal.

I think the pictures show it pretty well.



Appreciate any help on this.

What I won't do for a fellow M owner

It's 37 degrees outside. Wind is blowing. Four inches of snow/ice on the ground, but when you asked about those holes Jim, I had to find out Off I go into the cold and windy night to help an M owner.

I have the same holes on Nice Aft Don't worry about them

Now I intend to sip some 114 Old Grand-Dad and forget about it

Brrrr, when is Spring getting here?

P.S. My guess is some sort of pressure release when the hull flexes?

I think they are drain holes for the holes in the top of the transom that take the rudder position control rope inside transom.

If I am right, do I win prize, like a ride on your M

I guess we could test that by pouring some water down the rudder pull-down hole and see where it drains.

I will try tomorrow.

ON EDIT: It is really great to have my finally sitting in my own driveway. Makes these kind of exploratory investigations easy...and fun.

Mine is sitting in my driveway also. Last Tue when it was 79 outside, I decided it was time to remove the tarp so I can start cleaning her up. Well now it's 37 (a warm up from yesterday) and 4" of snow/ice are not just on the driveway, but on the boat as well

Stop whining. Mine has 15" of new snow around (and on) it. High today 28, current temp 24.

I've got them also, but on my M, the holes are simply 5200'ed on the inside. Clearly visible. I don't think the drain hole idea is the real answer, but I could be wrong. I am also curious about being drilled then gooped over.

Mine are just below the rudder brackets, not a obove
Sorry to hear about all you guys shoveling snow off your Macs. Just got back from a spirited sail in the ocean (Saturday.) About 50 degrees and overcast, rough seas, winds 15-30 knots, changing all day long. 5 people on board. Only one got sick, but that happens to Joe every time and he keeps coming back for more. God, I love this city!

I actually asked my dealer about those. They are indeed the drains for the rudder lift line channel. I asked about every hole in my boat actually

I could not live in a climate zone like yours.
Our winters drop to 50 on a cold night, always above 68 during the days.

Our summers average between 86-96 (often more) during the day, and if we are lucky, about 70 at night.

Winter is the best season, summer is a real struggle.
It is shorts all year, and a vest on winters morning till about 8.30am.
Keep in mind, we are in the 7th yr of drought, and that is really hard on you. You wouldn't believe how we can recycle water. Nothing, (from anywhere in the house,) is used only once.
