We too have to dename and rename our boat this spring. The wife and I are looking forward to this ceremony and the bottle's of wine that accompany it.
Here are the steps we will follow.

Re: Denaming ceremony
I took out the old name already, but cant take the shadow that still stayed at the hull.
Yesterday I used GooGone, then soap and water, then Hull cleaner, then Citrus cleaner, and then this same things al over again, waiting 10 min between each stage to let the product work, and cant take the last shadow of the old name.
Today I'm planning o use Ketone, Sulfuric Acid or thinner but I would like to know if any of this solvents will harm the fiberglass or gelcoat.
If someone knows, can you help me ?
Thank you

Re: Denaming ceremony
How about some Dupont #7 rubbing compound?
You can wait for Kevin to chime in if I am telling you something bad to do for fiberglass.

How our Macgregor 26X went from The Jenny to Imagine
We asked our boat a question...
"If you wish to keep the name The Jenny speak up now."
We got no answer.
We then asked "Do you have any objections being called Imagine"
Again no answer, our boat is now called Imagine
The name came about as we purchased her on the 50th Birthday of the Peace sign, John Lennon wrote our favourite song about peace and finally we had spent many hours talking about getting back out on the water.
I used a heat gun to loosen the glue holding the original vinyl letters to the hull, used some 1200 grit wet N dry sandpaper then buffed to remove the last of the glue residue.

Re: Denaming ceremony
I'm still trying to get off the old name and still have a shadow of the old letters.
I already tried, Ketone, Alcohol, Googone, polish compound (Turtle Wax), Buffeting with a electric drill, and yesterday a little bit of sanding with 600 sand paper. Nothing yet
Do you think the 3M rubbing compound will make the difference ?
Thank you

Re: Denaming ceremony
Is ther a way to paint over the name with a gel coat special paint ?
Or can you apply any kind of gelcoat based product to aplly over and maybe at the same time buildup a thicker layer of gel coat all over the hull ?
If you apply something gelcoat based, can you fill small scratches and a small chip ?. Which product ?
Thank you

Re: Denaming ceremony
Hector, The easy way would be to put the new name where the old name came from when glue, ink or dye has stained the gel coat is with a full graphic.
When the shadow from the old letters is minor increase the size of your lettering and add a bit of flare.

or go full bore with graphics using a block of colour or images to suit the name.

Re: Denaming ceremony
I went this weekend to west Marine in Austin, TX, and they say that the best way to remove an old lettering is using muratic acid.
The sell a produc named On & Off that contains muratic acid, so they said that this is the one to use and sice it is just $14 dlls. is cheap to give a try.
They sell also a 3M rubbing compound brown colored for $75 dlls., and the vendor said tha it wont make to much difference.
I live 380 miles from Austin and once at home, the On & Off product is not working, even if I leave it for 10 min. beween applications, and then hose it off as per instructions.
The vendor also say that if I decide to paint over, I will be spending $200 dlls. an all the required producs and a lot of work.
Any ideas ?
Thank you

Re: Denaming ceremony
Hello,
The "shadow" that you are speaking of is probably the UV damage that exposure causes. Under the previous letters there is less discoloration. You would have to buff / sand & buff enough gelcoat off to get the shadow to disappear. It's like buffing out the black stripe until only perfect shiny black remains. White gelcoat is discolored yellow and darker colors turn lighter even chalky with enough exposure. Every time I replace the license tags I get to see just how discolored my hull is.

Re: Denaming ceremony
I had to use fine sandpaper (I think it was 320 grit) to remove all of the discoloration from the old name of my Mac 19, "Beija-Flor." Nothing else would do. It took a lot of work to remove the stains, but - drat it - if it has to be done, we do what's necessary.
(The old name was preposterous for a 19-foot sailboat - "Intrepid". Now that's a fine name for an 18th-century frigate that's built to out-sail, out-gun, and out-fight anything the enemy was likely to send against it - or an aircraft carrier that's built to kick its enemy from Guadalcanal to Hokkaido - but it scarcely fits a little spit-kit like the Mac 19, however likable the boat is. Think birds: There are raptors, and then there are hummingbirds...)

Re: Denaming ceremony
If you sand off some of the gelcoat. How can you build up that layer of gelcoat again >
Wich product can you use to build up another layer of gelcoat or gelcoat like material over the hull ?
It wont be a good idea to cover the whole hull with another layer of gelcoat just to have it stronger ?
Thank you
