Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
I beleive the K/H sail is 6.5 dacron slightly heavier sail check their site they give that info on their site
the heavier sail will not blow-out as fast

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
5 Oz is as heavy as you want in a 150% Genoa if you ever sail in light wind. A heavier sail will not fill properly in lighter wind. The factory sail is 3.9 Oz, so 5 is already quite a bit tougher, more isn't always better.

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
Brian - my experience in that area (limited) is that winds are typically 10kts, gusting to 20 kts.
You wont have problems filling a genny in that wind. Go heavier.
Jim (c130king) might be able to give you more accurate sailing conditions.

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
Brian,
Despite the endorsement from Stephen I am afraid I can't really help you much. I have the 150 Genoa that came with my boat back in 2006 when I got it...don't know what type it is...a Doyle I think but not sure. But it is on a CDI FF-2 and I am very happy with it.
And as to the winds on the Chesapeake...not much help there either. I am on the Potomac near DC right now but moving out to the Chesapeake south of Annapolis in about 3-4 weeks. Haven't experienced the "normal" winds on the Chesapeake yet.
Maybe Rick W or Uncle Jim of any of the several others in this area that sail on the Chesapeake will see this and comment on the winds on the Chesapeake.
Good luck getting your Genoa.
Cheers,
Jim

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
A quote I read on another sailing blog.
"The cheaper the fabric the heavier the weight due to inferior 'crimping' of the yarns.
A high modulus cloth of lighter weight will vastly outperform a heavy inferior cloth vs. longevity vs. sail shape, etc. etc. etc. "

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
When do you do most of your sailing? Spring, summer or fall? Spring and fall, the winds on the Chesapeake can be quite brisk but during the summer they tend to be non-existant. You probably don't want a 150 for the higher winds anyway (you said you don't race), a smaller headsail would be more comfortable. A lightweight 150 ( or better yet, a spinnaker) would be the better choice for summer use on the Chesapeake. My boat uses hanked on headsails and I can easily change them out depending on the wind conditions, but with you roller furler set-up you are more limited. I would get a high tech material 120 for the furler and set the boat up for spinnaker use. You would be surprised how many nice "sailing" days you'll be able to have in the summer with the spinnaker, instead of frustrating, no wind, bake in the sun days!!

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
If you sail in a heavy air area and sail hard & your boat is heavely laiden like mine with alot of gear the 6.5 dacron sails will not blow out theirfore last longer, if your boat is lightly loaded you will be sailing with a Storm jib & third reefed main !!Terry wrote:A quote I read on another sailing blog.

In light to very light air the Spinn rules even your 3.9 dacron will not fly so you might as well fold the jib , genny & main up & fly a Spinn or Drifter 3/4 challenger cloth is good
You have to go to very expensive racing sails to get the light weight & strength quota

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
From personal experience I have the KH C2000 Furling 150pct Genoa. It's matched to the CDI Roller Furler system on my 02 26X. I sail here in Southeast Alaska and it works great. I just purchased the KH Spinnaker this winter and as soon as the snow melts from around the trailer we will be giving that a test too.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.

Great information here. Thank you for the feedback. You are correct, the summer winds can be non existent. I have thought about the 120 but if I need less I can always dial it back. I was on the water alot last year and I can say I have never reefed the main. I better practice that before I have to.

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
Hello everyone!
I think there is no reason to create a new thread with my question, so I'll ask for some help here:
I urgently need to know the dimensions for the 150 genoa RF (I have CDI) for 26M (2009) (the one that factory claims 206 s.f).
Have to order it in local sail loft (I am in Russia). I can't consider ordering it ready from US because the custom might not clear the package for a couple of months (happened before), so, luckily I found the shop that can make it within 2 weeks, I just need to confirm the measurements I found online:
Luff Leech Foot L.P.
25'4" 22'8" 16'9" 14'8"
it seems to be for a smaller area (may be a 135 Genoa), but I would like to have a 150%
Would really appreciate if someone helps me out,
Thanks,
Sergei

Serge, Here are specs that MacGregor provides to its suppliers, one for a genoa with luff tape, one with hanks:

Hyde Sails (advertiser here above) ship from the Philippines if that's any easier for customs.

Re: Need advise on new 150 Genoa
Thank you all for answering.
jbousquin: thats very helpful, thanks, and that confirms the number I found somewhere online, the area of that sail is 171 sq. ft , I believe it's for a 135% genoa
RussMT: for our custom it doesn't metter where it comes from, they just delay it for whatever reason (may be too many people buying stuff online from abroad)
RobertB: I did see that, the 150 genoa for 26M has no info, and the 26x genoa has even smaller size, although I read somewhere that this sail is the same size for 26X and 26M !? apparently not!
The factory site claims 150 genoa to be 206 SQ FT
http://www.macgregor26.com/specificatio ... ations.htm
so, question is still open
I also called BWYACHTS.com, but they couldn't help with size, just said they order it from sailmaker and it comes ready
p.s: found that link that reference the sail area
