Autohelm 3000 analog

Post by gabid »

Hi,

I am in need of a electronic schematic for an Autohlelm 3000 analog head unit. The unit only turns to one direction and I am trying to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not seen a schematic for it, the normal manual is availabe online.

I did a lot of research on them before I picked up one. The most common reason for them to pull seemed to be a problem with the compass. You may have it mounted too close to steel, magnet or even a power wire. I have the digital one, but its very finicky. It is also sensitive to how its mounted tilted forward backward. My comapasss will stick on 29 and 209 deg every once in awile. If you open it up you can see the gimballed compass inside, it may be stuck or have a broken mount. I debated buying an external ramarine fluxgate compass from a 4000, but am not sure if I would be able to get it to work. The internal compass uses individual push connectors on the board, so it would be easy to unplug and bypass, but the wires are not color coded. Another more expensive option is to pick up a 4000 head unit, I read they will work with the 3000 motor. Good Luck!

Thank you, I asked the seller if he has the electric schematics for it, waiting for an answer.

Thanks for info, that's good to know that a 4000 head control might work, but with a question mark. I remember reading an old post in cruisersforum.com saying the later head control units (after 3000 analog) are digital and incompatible. An electrical motor it is just a motor, I don't really see it why would not work.

Mine is not mounted on the boat yet. The short story, I got it on ebay as "working unit when was removed for upgrade". It turned out the whole unit was busted. I opened it up and I discover 3 problems: electric motor stuck, one layer of gears stuck as well and after I fixed the motor I figured out that the head unit is malfunctioning. The red LED never turns on, doesn't matter where the compass is pointing. I replaced the LED, but still only green led comes on and motor rotates only one directions. Honestly I am not so good with electronics boards, but my friend is. We tested the unit and concluded that something is wrong with circuit board, he offered to help if I can get my hands on a schematic.

It's not a big deal, it turns into fun trying to fix it :)

The guy answered, he has only "intalation user manual". This is available free from Raymarine's website.

If you bought it less than 45 days ago you can open a case under EBay Buyer's Protection program. You will win the case regardless of seller's return policy. Even if the seller specified no returns, sold as is, etc. it doesn't matter. Since the unit was sold as 'used-working' EBay will reimburse you full unit price + shipping cost within a few days and will deduct money from seller's PayPal account. Seller can say or complain all he wants, it doesn't matter.

Actually I got in touch with the seller. Because I got the drive unit working, I asked for half of the money back and keep the rest for spare parts. He agreed. I asked him how did he check the unit before removing it from boat, it turned out that he put it on ebay for his neighbor, he never checked the unit.

Any Luck?

Mine compass sticking more and more so I did some digging. I found the service manual for the st3000 with the schematics and troubleshooting info. For some reason the link no longer works, but I saved a copy if you want me to pm it to you.

All the older units before the external fluxgate all shared the same compass, part M022 (including the tiller pilots). It has a very thin ribbon cable that can go bad over time and loose connectivity throwing off the AP, which may be your issue. You can test the ribbon cable/compass with an Ohm meter. There are 6 pins on the ribbon cable, 1-5 are used and # 6 is empty.

1 and 2 <10 ohms
3 and 5 < 5 ohms
3 and 4 < 5 ohms
1 and 3 Open circuit

Mine was loosing connectivity at certain angles, so I just soldered in a new ribbon cable from an old PC board and amazingly enough it worked :!:

I've seen this post while I was looking for info on my Autohelm 3000.
I hope somebody is tuned on this subject. I read that SEAPUP has a copy of the service manual: I would appreciate very much
if he or anybody of you, who is in hold of a service manual, could send me a copy.

My unit is malfunctioning. When you put the unit on "SET" you caeasily turn the knob and reach a position where the green and
the red light flip alternatively. Then after putting the device to "1" the unit behaves correctly for a short while and afterwards starts
to steerto the left andkeeps doing so.

My unit has a compass in form of a cylinder that rotates on a vertical axis as you turn the knob and transmits a signal to the motherboard
via three sliding contacts on his bottom.
I have attached 2 photo

I've read from SEAPUP that there should be a ribboncable with 6 pin,but I can't see it.

Thanks in advance for any sugggestion you would give me to help diagnosing this problem.

Greetings,
Marcello

Hi, I check my emails, I never managed to get a service manual for the st3000. Shortly after I posted these messages, I end up selling the unit for parts in ebay and I bought an used 4000 autopilot. Sorry, cannot help.

I had the ST3000, here is a link to its service manual. It is different than the "3000 analog" you have pictured though...

Probably not what you are looking for, but here is what I have found.

http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/servicegui ... lm3000.pdf

https://raymarine.app.box.com/s/nwf2s5h ... 73019463/1

The sense I get off the web is; "Get a new AP". :(
