Replacement winch/upgrade swing keel for 2-22?
Replacement winch/upgrade swing keel for 2-22?
Hello:
My relative recently purchased a 1976 Venture 2-22 that needs to be completely overhauled. He is looking for a replacement winch or an upgrade for the swing keel.
I have no knowledge of MacGregor sailboats. Could anyone point me in the right direction to find these parts?
Thank you.

Look at Northern Tool on line, The winches are called a BRAKE WINCH, not the same as a trailer winch. You'll also need about 11 or 12 feet of new stainless cable and the ferrules and a tool for the ferrule if you do the job yourself. West Marine can also do cable work.

Make sure you note the way the drum winds. There are CCW and CW rotations. I upgraded to the heavier winch and found out the hard way.

Blue Water Yachts specializes in MacGregor parts for all models. I've bought a few items from them and they are tremendously knowledgeable about all the boats. You can look them up at http://bwyachts.com/

Following up on what Mr. McLellan said, when I bought a new winch at Northern Tool, the handle wouldn't fit the boat. I wound up (bad pun) using the new winch with the old handle. So save the old stuff in case you need to swipe parts.

I haven't called Blue Water Yachts yet, but I'm not interested in drilling new holes if I don't have to. Has anyone used the keel winch w/handle that Blue Water sells in order to replace their rusted out winch? If so, I would love to see some picture and get some measurements. Namely... what is the exact distance between the mounting screws on the new winch?

My 73 had a standard trailer winch. That worked but you had to be really careful with it. I don't think it was original but I replaced it with another when it rusted. I wonder if the winch the M model boat uses for the mast raising set up would work?
