Electronic Charts for Europe

Post by NautiMoments »

I am trying to find out what Electronic charts most people in Europe use. We are planning to cruise Britian, France, Italy, Mediteranian and the rest of Europe, over a year or so. We are interested in the inland waterways, canals and navigable rivers, as well as coast line. It is not the software to run the charts but the charts themselves that I am most interested in. I have heard that C-Map has the best coverage of the world, and I assume those areas. But do they cover the canals and rivers? What are you using?
Thanks for your help

I have a suspicion I'm in the minority but I use Navionics Gold charts with my Lowrance chartplotter. This is simply because the previous owner had installed this set up.

They are for coastal areas and over here they cost in the region of 200 or so. Navionics give a part exchange refund of 50% to update or even to swap region, once you have bought the first one (but you dont see this advertised much and I guess theres no guarantee that they will continue this policy).

Ive no experience of other charts but Im happy with the Navionics they have all the information including tidal streams, heights, etc and the displays seem clear enough to me. I have only used their UK chart so far but intend to add a chart for France for the coming Summer.

Thanks Tom, Even though I have been on C-Maps site I have not seen these pages. Hope everything is going good for you.

Mike & Frax, thanks for the reply. We are going over in 2010 and hope to meet several of fellow owners in our year travels.

I basically have decided to go with a Standard Horizon 175 with C-Map. This seem to have what we need for our home are and Europe. The boat show is this weekend and many boat bucks will be spent.
