What kind of engine and lower unit oil do you use?

Post by Mark Prouty »

Suzuki specific Manual:

Motor Oil:
The choice of engine oil is a major factor affecting engine performance and life.

Using a premium quality four stroke motor oil will increase the service life or your motor. Use only oil which are rated SE, SF, SG, SH, or SJ under the API classification system. The viscosity rating shoud be SAE 10-40.

GEAR OIL
Use Suzuki outboard motor gear oil, or equivalent high quality SAE90 hypoid gear oil.

A hypoid gear resembles a spiral bevel gear, except that the pinion is offset so that its axis does not intersect the gear axis; it is widely used in automobiles between the engine driveshaft and the rear axle. Offset of the axes of hypoid gears introduces additional sliding between the teeth, which, when combined with high loads, requires a high-quality EP oil.

You can tell this oil, you never forget the smell. It is difficult to wash it off, really sticks. I believe the outboard Bottom End use EP oil that has some ability to repel water. I beleive it is usually 80/90 weight, but they make heavier oils too.

The oil is rough duty stuff and meets the needs to lube the bearings/gear/shift cogs of the outboard.

Actually, EP stands for "Extreme Pressure" and this extra enhancement is provided by the additives to the oil. Marine versions of this oil have additional additives such as corrosion and oxidation inhibitors as well as anti-foaming agents.

There are a couple of different weights of these oils, and you need to consult your engine's manual to see which is most appropriate. Common weights are 80W/90 and 85W/140.

Hypoid gears are pretty much as TT says, although the axis of the pinion may or may not be in line with the driven gear - depends on design.

Now, for example in the drive-axle of most modern cars the hypoid gears consist of a spiral-cut pinion-gear running against a spiral-cut ring-gear, like this:

And in the case of marine engines they tend to look like this:

On edit: Forgot to mention *why* hypoid gears are used - they are much quieter than straight-cut bevel gears and provide a smoother power transfer, too.

I used only Redline Oils in my Suzuki DF50

Post by Robert »

I used Redline Oils after the 20 hour breakin period. I was cautioned by my dealer to use only the correct viscositied. I consulted with the RedLine people on the phone about the outboard motor aplication. I selected 10W40 motor oil and Heavy Shock Proof gear oil.

When my mechanic opened up the valve cover to check the valve adjustment after 2 years mostly WOT use, he expected to have to adjust the shims, but there was no significant wear, no need to adjust shims. I was told that my engine was in excellent shape, better than expected. I never have had a reason to get inside the gear case to look at the gears, since I have no gear trouble I suppose the RedLineOil Heavy ShockProof is working. The 20 hour checkup turned up gear tooth particles in the drained oil, I was told that was normal for the breakin. I would rather have had the Heavy ShockProof oil in for breakin to reduce the amount of metal in the oil coming out.
