The enclosure came with the boat when we bought it in 2009. I picked the boat up from Dowsar Yacht Sales in Hamilton, and I believe the enclosure was one of theirs. They since lost the templates in a fire, I have heard.

I haven't actually measured the height, but the bimini portion is at least 6' because I can stand comfortably. The boom ends just before the bimini, above the "connector piece" between the dodger and the bimini. With the stock sails, the boom on the centerline and the mainsheet tight, the end of the boom might just graze the connector piece of the enclosure, but it never has during real sailing.

The enclosure is my favorite part of the boat, and I'm starting to think about replacing it panel-by-panel. Harder than it sounds, though.

Why do you want to replace it? I replaced the windows in my dodger myself (easier than you might think), and in the bimini (which I put there so I could see the top of the mast from the helm), but the rest of it including all around enclosure with windows and screens, are still in good shape.

Mine's a Dowsar, too. Premium enclosure, IMO.

I've made periodic repairs to almost all of the seams, and replaced the windows of the dodger and the side bug-screens. I treat it with 303 fabric guard every year, but it's at least 12 years old and probably 20 years old, and it lives in-place on the boat all season long, exposed to the sun and the birds and the spiders. It's starting to fade a bit, and wear in the corners, and I don't know if it will go another 5 years. Also, I like black. I actually made a replacement dodger last year, zippers and all, by trying to match the existing one. It's above my pay-grade, though, and wasn't a perfect success. If I try again, it will be in April with the enclosure assembled so that I can measure in place, instead of trying to match a complicated shape.

That 303 fabric guard is good stuff. So much so that after I first treated it, I had to add weep-holes in the side-panel windows because the fabric become totally impermeable to water and would hold standing water in the seams until it molded.

Yes, exactly. I went there to buy a new 26M and they had this used X in the lot out back. I liked the layout of the X so much more, I bought the used one on the spot and left with it the same day. I overpaid, in the market of 2009, at $21,000 Cdn, but was happy to make the deal and own an X. In 2009 you could go to a dealer and they would have several new boats in stock, and you could negotiate the price. And a selection of outboards, so you could load one into your truck on the same day you bought it. Ah the good old days.

We sail from Hamilton area and it works well for us. Can sail inside the harbour area or head east thru canal to Lake Ontario. Choice often depends on the day’s breezes.

I haven't had good success with wing-on-wing sailing. The winds on our lake are just too variable. I prefer to headsail alone in those conditions, with the keel and motor up, and one rudder.

If the winds are correct, and you have time to take advantage, wing on wing is a delight. You really want to just sit in the captain’s seat and we enjoy the beauty of it.
