If you use the ultilty Ais Decoder you can view your live AIS data on Google Earth. Google earth can be used offline if you previsit any area on your trip as the data is saved by Google Earth to its cache. AIs decoder is free to downlaod

The mod is to the circuit board. Most modern marine vhfs can be modded. The book refers to modding a low cost vhf Hence the title AIS for under £30.00

If you have bsb charts you can convert the .kap file to overlay Google Earth satellite images so you can see depth data and navigation marks.
