Mike, Which new rudders would you go for? Besides the stock rudders the only replacements I'm aware of are those from IdaSailor which are cut from a solid piece of HD plastic. I believe I read some reports on this board of several of these having broken. So they don't sound any stronger than the sto...

MM,

If you were to start over, would you change the rudders on your X or just strengthen the mounting brackets?

If you were to redo your CB, what would you do?

Thanks,
Eric

MaddMike,

In some of your posts you have mentioned jack lines. Can you describe for us how and where you mounted them, and how you use them? Ever had an occasion where the harness and jackline kept you on the boat when you otherwise might have gone overboard?

Tom, I do in fact like the Plastic/Wood composites that are in the marketplace these days. Just a heads up. The all plastic lumber holds up okay, but I've hear that the plastic/wood composities if left exposed to enough water will over time deteriorate quite a bit. Apparently the wood particles will...

While the Mac may not have been designed for a trip like sailing to Hawaii neither are a number of other boats that have made the trip like a West Wight Potter, a Catalina 22, and a Montgomery 15. Yes even a Montgomery 15. A link describing the trip is here: http://msog.org/yarns/hawaii15.cfm

It is not clear to me which would be of the greater benefit: a flat thin board with a narrow trunk opeing to minimize trunk drag at the expense of a less efficient board shape, or an air foil shape for better board performance but with a larger trunk opening for with more trunk drag. Anyone know the...

I might be wrong about this but I got the impression the Zodi heater air tubes pretty much formed a closed system and it was only the burner which received and discharged outside air - the burner air being isolated from the air being heated by a heat exchanger. So putting both the inlet and outlet t...

Gerald, I was looking at removing the mast compression post on my M19 so I could access the nut on the botoom of the bolt that goes through the mast step plate into the center of the post. It would have involved cutting away a part of the liner and sliding the bottom of the post off the top of the t...

Frank,

If trunk drag is a significant performance factor, then a DB will have an advantage over a CB because the board fills the opening in a DB. The M should have less drag than the X and perform better as a consequence.

adm, You seem to have a bit of technical knowledge on the subject of foil shapes. I don't. So maybe you can help me out a bit more. - How much effect does thickness of a CB or DB have on performance? Is there an optimum ratio (length/width to thickness)? Would it be different for a foil shaped board...

I found this description of a LB/DB experiment in a book by Thomas Firth Jones that I thought was interesting. After the first season, I cut Monkeys' bottom and built a daggerboard trunk. To make sure the experiment was equable (if you change more than one thing at a time, you don't know which chang...

Leon & Terry, Sounds like your DB is shifting back and forth in the fore/aft direction. If not every M owner has this problem maybe there is a problem with the fit of your DB in the trunk. Some boats with a DB have a way to lock them down when they are lowered (West Wight Potter 19 for example)....

Normo, Thanks for sharing the results (or lack of) of some of your changes. From what I have read about rudder mods to the X, the biggest difference was not from trying to improve on the shape of the rudders, but strengthening and adding about 3" to the leading edge the change the balance of th...

MaddMike,

I would be interested in hearing more details about how you reinforeced your CB trunk to handle your modified board.

Thanks

I haven't looked at any charts regarding the winds and currents, but Bill Teplow sailed his Potter 19 to Hawaii from CA in Aug. It took 24 days and sounded like he was sailing with the trade winds not fighting them. A description of his trip can be found here. http://www.wingo.com/billsvoyage/techno...
