Re: Gel coat again…

Hi Herschel! Wow! A boathouse AND a boat port! You treat your O’Day pretty nicely! :) :) It will make it that much nicer to work on for sure!!! I’ll follow your lead and get our pop up out to work on the boat trailer refurbishments….I’ll have to move it around but it beats gettting rained on...

Re: aerobic sailing???

Well, folks, I did it again. Close to aerobic boating. Took the Admiral and one of her lady friends cruising down the St. Johns River. Anchored in a secluded bend off the main channel where I have often stopped for a picnic. While we were on the hook, what to my surprise came "steaming" ar...

Re: Gel coat again…

I hope to practice on my Sprite with some touchup areas. That project is 3rd in my queue of major efforts behind some home improvements and a course I am teaching. If I can get to it (and that goes well), I may entertain the Mac effort in the fall. https://i.postimg.cc/QF6XyXVB/b9a39a7b-a836-495a-8...

Re: aerobic sailing???

I just back from Albuquerque last night (via San Francisco). Does that count as a New Mexico story? :D I started to say only if it involved a tarantula, but, since I have an Albuquerque story, too, yes, yours counts, too! My Albuquerque story. Again, the Admiral and I were traveling west on I-40 he...

Re: USCG to Scrap 100’s of NE Nav Bouys

I just went out and looked at all of the proposed changes in Florida (at least I think I found them all) and all of the proposed changes look reasonable to me. In Florida it's not a wholesale removal of aids to navigation, it is a removal of one marker that I (and probably Herschel) know to be dang...

Re: aerobic sailing???

Well, I’m 69 and still at it, so I guess it ain’t that difficult! That being said, Jan and I are leading our scouts on a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch this summer. For those who don’t know, Philmont is a very large plot of land in northeastern New Mexico, where Scouts can go on 12 day backpacking tr...

Re: aerobic sailing???

I’m on the downslope to 76, and going strong, but I do exercise with 50lb barbell and 20lb dumbbells three times a week just before power walking 5.1 miles. I’m exhausted afterwards, but it’s how I try stay in shape. And yes, Herschel is my inspiration. You are so gracious. I am impressed with the ...

Re: aerobic sailing???

Stickinthemud57 reported: While I don't kid myself that sailing is a substitute for my exercise classes, I place it in the "worthwhile physical activity" category. That is what I am curious about. Yes, I endeavor to get in bicycling and swimming on a regular basis, but, honestly, I fall fa...

aerobic sailing???

Hey, fellow Mac sailors. Virtually every time I go boating, even if it is just motoring, I score well on my heart monitor with my smart watch. I'm 80 years old so my target heart rate for moderate exercise should be about 112 according to the American Heart Association. Yesterday I was out enjoying ...

Re: Gel coat again…

Thank you both for the response. Sticker shock to say the least. No way 5-8K is worth it. Same issues for me that you stated for the DIY route. Definitely thinking of only the rub rail and up plus cockpit. I had good luck with basic West marine primer and paint for my 10-ft O'Day Sprite I painted ab...

Re: Gel coat again…

Hi! Went through a whole analysis on over paint vs re-gel-coat with a couple of pros who are set up for this kind of work. While paint wasn’t cheap the gel-coat was at a whole new level of $$$ pain….. The pros could get the whole job done with paint in a week …. Gel-coat was more like two to three ...

Re: Old geezer stanchion mod

I'm. It quite ready for the old geezer handles (which means I am still in denial) but the technique of facing forward while stepping down into the cockpit makes so much sense to me. Obvious in hind sight, but that's where I struggle for balance. Very helpful! Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. It i...

Re: Old geezer stanchion mod

Stickinthemud57 built me additional brackets for my starboard "old geezer stanchion." They came in handy for a recent family outing with visiting relatives. My brother got to use/test the mod, too. 8) https://i.postimg.cc/CdcJGKgd/20250409-105746.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/0r6Fy4Fz/IMG-20250...
