Re: outboard (Honda BF50A) overheating 1st day out
in addition to all other excellent suggestions posted here and in the other thread referenced above, there is one other problem I had encountered after replacing my impeller and the indicator. The thermostat on my BF50 was frozen solid in closed position by salt deposits and had to be rplaced. Fortu...

Re: BWY Steering Quick Disconnect
I have installed this two years ago and it works fine. Until I installed autopilot I used it every time, it makes for a better feel of the helm when sailing. After I had autopilot installed last year I frequently forget to disconnect the motor, it really doe not make much difference for the autopilot.

Re: steering linkage pop quiz
No that was one of my first projects was to align rudders to each other,... I have been thinking about the same. The problem is that there is no way to adjust them short of bending the linkage. It is a 1" or even 1.25" pipe and not easy to bend. Also, my starboard rudder is loose in its b...

Re: Backstay
My backstay is loose. I suppose if I hucked on it enough I could get one more notch in. Does it need to be tight? At the moment, it will do little more than prevent the mast from pitching forward under high load. Yes, absolutely. But not always. I have just installed backstay tension adjuster on my...

Re: gear shift cables kaput
looking at pictures in this thread I have noticed the two ways to route teleflex cables, I call them "above" and "below" the steering cross bar. I have tried both and neither works very well. I have exactly the same set up, honda 50 hp, 26X made in 2002, same cross bar and all. I...

Re: Bahia Honda Trip Report
This report is following a trip the Admiral and I made from Isle Of Palms, SC to Bahia Honda State Park a couple of weeks ago. .. yes, very nice place. We had visited there in 2010, we also launched at the Bahia Honda park and sailed to and little past Key West. Planned to go to Dry Tortugas but it...

Re: Problems w newly installed Wheel pilot X-5
When the autopilot is released, there is no friction on the wheel. But it sure squeaks when the drive is engaged. It's kind of annoying, but manageable. Does your autopilot squeak when engaged? Is there something to make it squeak just a little less? Phil M :macm: I used a little teflon spray same ...

Re: Wandering at anchor
I usually drop the rudders half the way to reduce swing at anchor. Usually I get it under 90 deg, but it is still more than other boats. Probably not a good idea in a strong wind. Tried dropping the centerboard, it makes it worse. too much of freeboard could be a bad thing. I will try a bucket next ...

Re: Problems w newly installed Wheel pilot X-5
I agree. When installing the X5 autopilot the manual must be followed closely. In particular, my X5 would not work properly until I have connected power with 16 AWG wire, added a braid for ground, and separated power cable from the NMEA cable from GPS. I have also added ferrites on both NMEA cables ...

Re: honda 50A outboard electrical problems
replaced the voltage regulator/rectifier, and the charge coils - all works now. Battery is charging. Looks like the outboard is in a good shape now, oil does not leak and electrical system works. I am still unable to fix the original problem, which is the overheat alarm. My problems started after mo...

Re: VHF antenna thru top cabin connector
I had recently found in my closet an old antenna I bought for something else, and decided to install it on my masthead. At first, I was also worried about losing the signal over a long cable and connectors. So, I decided to make a simple experiment. I invested $5 in a microwave detector. First I sec...

Re: More Honda woes. (Different, but related to previous rant)
This post topic was started 6 years ago by PaulS. Issues wih his HONdA 50. Aug 1st 2005. (Time flys too fast) I stand corrected, the honor of starting this thread in 2005 does not belong to me. I merely contributed when the same problem with overheating happened to me. Now, I am having a new proble...

Re: honda 50A outboard electrical problems
My research shows that your motor has a combined rectifier/regulator. My dealings with these types of units (not yours specifically) has been that the regulator fails and takes out part of the rectifier bridge, or vice-versa. I highly doubt that your coil/stator is bad. Suggest that you just replac...

Before you spent a lot of bucks on this, give us the model and year of your Honda 50. We might be able to save you some money! You really should put this info in your profile, to help with future questions. ~Rich the serial number on my motor is BAZS3221773 , the model number I think is BF50A2 LRTA...

Re: honda 50A outboard electrical problems
It is a charging coil problem, and possibly also something in the voltage regulator (which I, in my ignorance, called a "CDI unit", which it is not, I now understand the difference). The motor runs OK, I hope CDI and ignition coils are not affected. Now, I am planning to replace the chargi...
