Frank, Mac's long, relatively wide and deep slot is in probably in the worst possible location in respect to smooth flow of water over the bottom of the hull. The culprit lies in induced eddies. You may try to close it by some sort of overlapping rubber strips which may still allow to raise and park...

Eric, - How much effect does thickness of a CB or DB have on performance? Is there an optimum ratio (length/width to thickness)? Would it be different for a foil shaped board vs. more of a flat plate with rounded edges? In general for laminar foils thicker ones have potential of generating more lift...

Lets size it up. There is difference in angle at which flat plate moving trough water will "stall" comparing to foil (Someone mentioned NACA 12). At speeds around 7 - 9 knots it is about 9 degrees and 15 degrees respectively. Thicker profiles will stall and bigger angles. But even when foi...

I do agree that my conclusion seems to be wrong . But I analysed several many different combination of wind and current and in all other cases the boat with extra wind (extra energy source) had advantage. The conditions decribed by puzzle look like exception from many other possible situations. Beca...

Chip made ecxellent point about the key issue. The key to the problem is the reference point. In reference to the water sailing boat will win but in reference to the ground it will be opposite. And the ground is the key reference as the racing comitee boat is anchored firmly to the ground and finish...

I am not questioning the ability of boat to make the progress in head wind. I am pointing out that it is important to count amount of the energy available for propeling the boat. Situation of still water and wind only is exactly the same as current and no wind. In both situations boat will have appa...

How to handle crew over board?

How do you handle problem of retrieving disoriented, weaken crew from water on Mac 26 in difficult conditions - taking into account its high sides, small inertia, drifting in the wind etc... Did anyone give any serious thought how to do it? - best tactics when sailing or motoring in heavy weather, c...

No one disputes ability to sail in apparent wind. Problem is that the boat movement will change speed and direction of this wind. When boat starts moving its total headway component over the ground toward finish will be less then current. boat will move over the water but it will always lag behind t...

Tom, It is possible that OEM sailmaker had bolt rope too short to begin with and did not follow on this mistake. If you had problem with relatively new sail - fixing it is logical. I still recommend to restich bolt rope back in new position leaving few inches of luff shorted to allow for rope to str...

Start with following situation: Both sailors have independently ONLY aft wind blowing toward finish line - Sailor A: 5 mph and sailor B: 10 mph respectively and each have no current. Who can make better progress towards the finish? Now INCREASE current by 1 mph for both and DECREASE wind by 1 mph fo...
