Re: MacGregor 26M trailer specs question
Hello, Our factory 26M trailer was stolen from a fenced parking lot (who would do such a thing, right?!) and so we are now looking for a suitable used trailer.. As the boat is in the marina 800 miles from the house, it looks like I will have to find and buy a trailer based on dimensions and weight ...

Re: Morse steering system maintenance
I would not attempt to pull the cable out of the system. I would attempt to pressure lube it in situ; but only if it’s getting stiff. If it’s giving you no problems, I’d clean and grease the exposed/easy access stuff at the outboard and call it done. Make sure you grease the outboard fittings where ...

Re: MacGregor Sailing Accident - Safety Reminder
I have a 1995 x and it has two ballast fill valves one on the stern and one on the bottom of the hull . The one under the hull I never use . But if I did need to fill ballast in rough conditions thats the one to use if the waves are up. Do the later model x and The M boats have an under the hull va...

Re: Morse steering system maintenance
https://youtu.be/IucARiVT0JE https://youtu.be/tfMn6bGfAKs A couple of videos on working the end of the system that normally gives issues. I’ve also seen guidance on pressure lubricating the cable from the motor end. I haven’t seen anyone working the wheel end of the system - except to replace the wh...

Re: MacGregor Sailing Accident - Safety Reminder
Watched the entire video again. The camera boat was a 70, not a 65. The 26 is shown on both tacks. Wind: 42mph average gusting to over 51mph. Paraphrasing Roger: …we had several days of unusual weather and took a Macgregor 26 out sailing under a gale warning. …We don’t recommend sailing a small boat...

Re: MacGregor Sailing Accident - Safety Reminder
That video is deceptive as hull. For the life of me, I never understood why they released it. Notice that the boat is on the same point of sail the entire time. Reason? Agree. Roger was all about selling boats. Some of the sales propaganda was over the top. He was filming from the helm of his 65 Ma...

Re: Accidental Gybe Prevention/Control - Boom Brake
If you run, it can happen. I got swept off my own deck by an accidental gybe. I had two of my sailing buddies aboard; one at the helm, the other on the foredeck with me discussing whether or not to put up the asymmetrical. When we started getting it ready, the wind was light. In the short time we sp...

Re: How well do MacGregors sail compared to other 22-27 ft keelboats?
Yes, well said. I would add, the X and M boats generally have a massive outboard on the transom that further reduces their sailing prowess. This can be made worse by leaving the foot of said outboard in the water while sailing.

Re: Troubleshooting a rounding-up problem
My forestay is very difficult to secure. I dread the idea of making it tighter. (Although there could be other causes/solutions that I don't know about). You will be loosening the shrouds and backstay when you tighten the forestay. You don’t have to make the rig any tighter (harder to pin). Typical...

Re: Troubleshooting a rounding-up problem
We have actually plowed this field before… https://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=360771#p360771 To answer your questions: your logic looks correct. 4 degrees from true vertical is likely too much mast rake. Why would we do it? Because our boat was not set up properly according to th...

Re: Boat Speed as a function of Wind Speed
Thanks for posting your polar points! Very interesting.
One other point. Theoretical hull speed is for displacement hulls. If a boat planes, that formula doesn’t apply (much less so for foiling).

Re: Troubleshooting a rounding-up problem
Here is a post from a thread on mast setup a few years back that may have relevancy. https://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=355383#p355383 Roger wanted the boats set up on the safe side. If a novice gets overzealous, a roundup is safer than a knockdown. A lot of folks have adjusted t...

Re: Pressurized water tank
Then there would be a low pressure air pump like those used for air mattresses to pressurize the pressure tank that would feed the faucet. An air pressure switch turns on/off the air pump. The mattress air pump we’ve been toying with is actually pretty quite quiet. I’d mount it and feed clean outsi...
