Re: They’re Back and They’re Worse Than Ever!

I already got my booklet, Russ and am preparing to apply the preventative paint even though I only sail in Rocky Mountain lakes. Can't be to careful with something this dangerous!

Re: Outboard mount / transom extention

On my D, if you mount the outboard in the well, you really cannot turn the motor for steering. I have owned three motors in the 9 or 10 HP range and none of them had enough room to steer with. The Mercury had such a large head that you could not even tip the propeller all the way out of the water. I...

Re: Depowering procedure/schedule

On my D I find the boat very hard to keep from rounding up with just the main, especially if you have the stock rudder. I would drop the main and sail with just the jib rather than go the other way. BUT, I'm a very lazy sailor, so if you are getting to 20 or 25 knots wind as in your example, I'm pro...

Re: Why is the backstay offset?

My D, and I think all of the classics, has a tiller and a stern hung rudder. It seems as if mounting the backstay closer to the middle would restrict movement of the tiller. Making a "Y" shaped attachment might work if you don't run into the outboard motor well. That might be a comparably ...

Re: 1984 M25 Rudder Downhaul Auto Release

I wound up doing just as you suggest, with a block and a cam cleat on the tiller. Prior to that, however, I went for years with about a 1 foot long piece of 5/8" shock cord attached into the downhaul line. A slack part of the line allowed about 5" of stretch before hitting the limit and be...

Re: Kicker

I'm pushing a 26D, so not quite apples to apples, but I installed a 5 HP electric last year. Using 740 Watts per HP I hit GPS speed of 7.3 Knots at (pretty much hull speed) 3 HP. The other 2 HP is for pushing against strong wind or or trying to get a displacement hull to plane. (it really does get s...

Re: Is A MacGregor the right boat for me?

I have a D and would not agree with that. When I want to beach it I can pull the board up completely into the trunk and have a smooth bottom, so it probably is as easy to beach as an S. I have put it on the sand and let the tide go out from under it with no problem. I haven't been in an S, but I thi...

Re: Problem lowering swing keel

Don't know about the V-21, but on my V-25 the brake was automatic. You just started cranking the opposite direction and after about 1/2 a turn the cable started to extend. There was no catch to fiddle with.

Re: Shroud tension???

Regarding adjusting the shrouds, I have always been able to use 2 pointed scratch awls of about 1/4" diameter. Find the hole that is about half way centered and force the point of the awl in. Then remove the existing pin and force the awl the rest of the way. This will bring another hole to abo...

Re: 1988 MacGregor 26D Live Abroad Inquiry

Wow! that's wild! My wife and I occasionally water camp on our 26D. I would bet that even with the sails and rigging stowed for the night, we have less windage than your boat does. In a breeze it will definitely rock you to sleep. Our boats are known to be "tender", and that includes at th...

Re: Replacing the keel cable - yes/no?

Having had the cable break on my 25 when the keel was about 1/2 way up I say replace it if you don't know what shape it is in. It scares everyone in a mile radius when that 900 pounds of pig iron slams down into the stops! let alone the fun of getting it on the trailer again afterword! I was able to...

Re: VHF mysteries

Yes, that fitting is definitely either the anchor light (masthead) or a steaming light (about 5 feet up the mast, pointed forward). A similar fitting can be used for the antenna, but most people just drill a hole near the base of the mast and use an inline connector and a pigtail to hook up the conn...

Re: Best way to identify Trailer?

I replaced the surge brakes on my 26D trailer with electric. I assume it would be about the same as yours. Used an internet sight called "E-Trailer" and all I needed to do was remove the backing plates and measure the distances between mounting holes. They are all pretty standard, with onl...

Re: Outboard Power on a 26D

That's pretty much my sailing also. My 8 HP 2 stroke has literally never been above the start power setting except when I test it each spring. I'm just not in that much hurry! I'm thinking I'll splurge on the 5 horse electric if I can get the battery situation worked out for it. So far, 24 volts and...
