Re: Fore/Aft weight balance vs. sailing performance.
It makes me feel better, thanks. I did see a 2000 Catalina 250 for $20,000. There must be some reason there is a $12,000 difference. https://i.postimg.cc/2qJckwFG/IMG-8522.png Your looking on a broker sales sight, if it's over 15 years old they are all shown as overpriced. It will likely sit for ye...

Re: Fore/Aft weight balance vs. sailing performance.
I understand what your point is, I’m just finding it hard to believe it’s accurate. Mac’s do hold their value well, but they were so significantly cheaper to purchase brand new. I bought one brand new in 2004 (2005 model), and a comparable keel boat was considerably more. Even with our boats holdin...

Re: Fore/Aft weight balance vs. sailing performance.
Can you document this :?: There are always some forum members who are looking to sell their Mac. This could be good news for them. What needs to be documented? Mac's have held their value quite well vs regular sailboats, you've been around here for a long time so I'm pretty sure you're quite well a...

Re: Fore/Aft weight balance vs. sailing performance.
I'd have to agree that 50hp is a good low-end if you plan on getting the boat fully up on a plane. My 40hp will get into a semi-planing mode well above hull speed but it never gets all the way in front of the bow wave. As to the specific statement that they "can't get on plane with ballast&quo...

Re: Fore/Aft weight balance vs. sailing performance.
Don't put less than a 50 on it. They can't get on plane with ballast, and can barely go fast enough for it to drain. With ballast at full power the boat is unstable and hard to control. My 26X came with a 30 from the PO and I installed a 90, keep the engine you have. My boat sailed as good or better...

Re: Slowly making forward progress lol
It was said above, but make sure you replace the water pump impeller. If it's been sitting for a while or it's just old, it could and likely will fail within minutes of operation.

Re: New 20 horsepower outboard
Mine originally had a 30 hp on it when I bought it and it was awful. It was extremely unstable at full power with the ballast in, it would almost plane but was nearly uncontrollable at 9-11 knots. If the ballast was empty, it would do 12-13 knots and was better. I removed the 30 and put on a 90hp, i...

Re: BWY MAST OPENING MOD
My boat had a sail stop with a thumb wheel lock that stopped the sail from falling out of the track when I bought it. When I purchased a BWY sail, I just pounded the gap closed with a mallet and a block of wood. I cut a notch just big enough for the sail slugs to go in as low as was practical and us...

If you drained it and ran the carb dry the vapor left would not be an issue.

Re: To Paint or To Grease… That is The Question….
IMO the best solution would be to apply black Fluid Film AS11B to the entire trailer. I've never done it to a trailer but it would be the best solution to save a trailer and all the components on it from rusting further.

Re: MacGregor Sailing Accident - Safety Reminder
Very interesting. I never knew the earlier 26X filled from the bottom. Roger must have figured out that it's possible to drain the ballast while under power via the transom. This configuration seems to be how the earlier 26S/D models operated and he kept that system. Now I wonder if it's possible t...

Re: Gel coat again…
I did lots of gel coat repairs on my X but not the whole thing. Spraying is best over large areas, I sprayed my rudders and the hinged seat. If I were to do the whole thing, I would just paint it. On a side note the Total Boat white gel coat was pretty much an exact match for color on my X.

Re: Mac Hate?
I've never seen hate, I just sold my awesome 26X on to another owner last weekend. I owned it for six years and most of it in the same marina its in now along with my new boat. A couple of sailboat people over the years said hello, mostly power boat people introduced themselves though and were alway...

Re: 14.7kn under Sail?
Roger also said you can do 20mph with a 50HP on a 26X, and that the M was faster than the X, and that you can also tow the boat with a Ford Crown Vic. All just as much BS. I used to work with a guy who towed his 28' pontoon boat from town to the lake with a retired cop car Crown Vic. That looked pr...

Re: Bunk cover replacement
I doubt my limited trailer usage would be much of a test. Other that maybe 8 months of UV exposure, since I splash it once.
