Re: Buying a 1989 26D

That's pretty much the rig I'm running now. The main has held its shape nicely thus far, but then again that's only been two years. You convinced me to pass on the RF jib. I'm sticking with hank-on. I figure if down the road I want to try the RF won't really be out much money and there are plenty o...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

I'm slowly getting better. I never thought I'd be so pumped to go on a couple-mile walk but that was my big Christmas accomplishment. I ordered the SailTimer wind instrument. I've also decided to get the Pcnautic autopilot, which is pricier than your standard Ray/Sim tiller pilot but will interface...

Re: Really Entry Level Sail Boats

Yeah, $60k is not really "entry level" to most people. As Gotro alludes to, it depends on one's definition of "yatch". Mine would be closer to a boat that cannot be removed from the water without using a hoist and cannot be trailered safely by a vehicle with a 3500-lb towing capa...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

Definitely take it easy. I rue the times I did not after a procedure. Plans and drawings, shopping for parts you will need, etc. Look forward to future posts and PM's.

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

An ambitious list to be sure. All good stuff! I eyed the traveller at BWY, but did not feel the 2:1 ratio would be sufficient, but I could be wrong. I set mine up with a Viadana 3:1, but realized that having the control lines feeding from the starboard and port ends of the rail was not ideal as I wa...

Re: SailTimer Wind Instrument & Apps

Looks like a well-designed system. Very smart to make it wireless, and the app looks very smart as well. The price seems reasonable as well. Not something I need at the time as 99% of my sailing is on our small local lake, but seems like it would be a real boon for those who want an instrument and c...

Have you tried Google Earth? More coverage that Google Maps, no street view, but in some cases oblique and even 3D views.

Re: Accidental Gybe Prevention/Control - Boom Brake

I have experienced a few accidental gybes, but only when I allowed myself to get distracted, coupled with an unexpected and radical change in wind direction. I'm keen on minimizing deck clutter, halyards, control ropes, etc., so unless such a device would be free of those problems, my tendency would...

Re: Any downside with going to the optional larger, 5/32" headstay.

Here's something that I encountered, but won't apply to you unless you use twist-on hanks on your foresail(s). I ordered a sail and though it was advertised as having bronze piston-type hanks, came with plastic twist-on hanks. I decided to give them a try but they came off too easily when dropping t...

Re: Google Your Boat!

Cool thread. Google maps show my slip empty, and I can tell from the other boats that it was recent, so either I had the boat on the lake or on the hard. I did find two boats on the lake, but the resolution was not good enough for me to tell if either was my boat.
