Re: bow eye repair
The job is, in my opinion, basically impossible without cutting the small panel at the front of the vee berth for access. If your 25 is the same as mine, the wood backing block is held in with a layer of glass, so you can’t just remove the hardware and pull it out, you have to cut it out. Here’s wha...

Re: I did a thing...
I would guess storage for a tongue extension. Seems odd though, as the tongue already looks to be about a nautical mile long. Does it retract or something?

Re: Stainless Steel Hardware 316 or 304?
The first link says “We do not currently stock 316L stainless steel fasteners for online purchasing. If you are interested in ordering 316L stainless steel bolts and fasteners, please contact us or request a quote to discuss your project’s needs.” The hardware cost might be a small percentage, but i...

Re: Stainless Steel Hardware 316 or 304?
Not sure if 316L hardware is readily available at the consumer level. 316 will be fine for anything that is not continuously submerged in salt water. For deck hardware, I’m sure most boat builders use 304 as it’s cheaper, and it does fine. I think most bow and stern rails, and Bimini and dodger fram...

Re: Venture 17 - new keel winch support
You will want to anchor it somehow either way. If not it will slide out of place when you are sailing and there is no keel weight pulling down on it, and the boat is heeling. You could make it long enough that you can bolt down on either side (red). Alternatively you could make it a little shorter a...

Re: Venture 17 - new keel winch support
For $30 you can get a pretty hefty piece of aluminum. That would be plenty strong enough and last for decades with zero maintenance unlike wood.

Re: Shroud Tension how to tell mast is even each side.
I think step one is to just sit at the base of the mast and look up. If you can’t see a curve (side-to-side) than the uppers and lowers are agreeing with each other. As for the whole mast leaning one way or the other, I think all you can do is walk away from the boat and see if it looks vertical. A ...

Re: alternative to rudder bolts
I’m not familiar with the X setup, but it sounds like you are using non-stainless bolts. Switching to stainless should solve the corrosion issue, and if you are currently using the inexpensive stuff from the hardware store, it should be a fair bit stronger as well.

Re: Mac 25 Trailer drawings or specs?
That’s the original trailer. They do look short, but that’s the design. The keel should be lowered into its cradle, which reduces the weight on the back of the bunks. I do wish it was a little longer because at some point I’d like to convert it to tandem axles, and I’m not sure there is enough frame...

Re: trailer tire not holding pressure
Sorry for not directly answering the questions, but I think worth mentioning: if the rim doesn’t show any corrosion, check the valve stem. My father had all 4 tires go flat in one season on a cargo trailer after maybe 5-6 years of ownership. The tires were fine, but the rubber valve stems had all st...

Re: Venture 17 - need hatch rails
Yes I believe the originals are teak. I used this to replace the rotted top rails on my 25. I filed the edges round before installing for when I inevitably stub a toe on it.

Re: Mac 25 Trailer drawings or specs?
Here are quick measurements of mine: The trailer is about 21’ L x 6’ W. The V block is about 21” back from the ball hitch and 16” up from the frame. The axle is about 88” (not sure how these are measured, that’s roughly tire center to center). The bunks are about 32” apart and rise from 4” up to abo...

Re: Heat on SS steel
300 series stainless steels (304 and 316 being common on boats) are not heat treatable. They do work harden (cold working), so actually get slightly stronger as they deform (up to a point). If anything, heating could anneal it and make it softer. There are other grades like 400 series and 17-4 that ...

Re: Calculating tow weight - back of the napkin math
I don’t trust Roger’s advertised boat weights at all. The 25 is listed as 2,100 lbs (iron swing keel, so no wet and dry displacement). Anything else in this size range with a keel weighs at least 700 lbs more. So here are some pictures of my attempt at figuring this out on my end. A shop crane, scal...

Re: Venture 17 - Hull ID location
Sorry can’t help with that one, I have a Mac 25, not a V17. I just chimed in because I know Ventures are the older boats and I know that the HIN requirement only goes back so far.
Edit: the picture didn’t load before. Looks pretty good for a free boat
