Florida Keys Advice

The Admiral is finally retiring so she and I are interested in trailering our :macm: from Texas to the Florida Keys in January and berthing it there for perhaps a month. We are interested in recommendations from any of you with experience in the area. Great but affordable marinas (that don't charge ...

Re: Midship docking cleat

Would also love to add midships cleats. FWIW we have used the winches and jamb cleats to secure spring lines at our slip for the past 2 years without issue. It's not ideal but works fine and is easily adjusted. We aren't depending on those lines to secure the boat, just to reduce hard yanking. No bi...

Re: Have you ever had the itch to sell your 26M/X and buy a "true" sailboat?

Have you looked at the Gemini 105m's? 8) We are looking in the Mediterranean for something in the 10-12 m range (under 40 foot), not as a replacement for our :macm:, but as a place to summer. Has to be more of a deep water boat to handle conditions there, but the real driver is that it must be comf...

Re: New Tow Vehicle

Ah, the promise of the perfect hybrid that meets all needs. That thought really appeals to the engineer in me, but it is a bit of a unicorn in reality and is a compromise that optimizes nothing and results in just OK for a lot of things. For our use case of only occasionally trailering our :macm: , ...

Re: New Tow Vehicle

Yeah, we went from an 8 cylinder Chevy Avalanche (good range but terrible efficiency, such that we ended up leaving the tow vehicle stored in Corpus Christi with the boat, rather than drive it back and forth to Austin), to a Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid (surprisingly strong and better efficiency, mostl...

Re: New Tow Vehicle

Forgot to mention we upgraded as well.

Powerful enough that we hardly feel the boat back there, somewhat offset by a 300 mile towing range. Nice to be able to run the power washer from the truck A/C outlet.

Re: Rigging the Reefing setup on a MacGregor 25

Sounds like a fantastic project.

If you can't tell already, there is a small crowd of Mac nerds gathering, eager to offer help, advice, and perhaps a small amount of friendly heckling. :D

Re: Old geezer stanchion mod

I'm. It quite ready for the old geezer handles (which means I am still in denial) but the technique of facing forward while stepping down into the cockpit makes so much sense to me. Obvious in hind sight, but that's where I struggle for balance. Very helpful!

Re: Sailing the Bahamas

Didn't watch the whole thing but it caught my eye because we're headed to Nassau for a week next month. Staying on a boat slipped at Paradise Island and will definitely be checking out a few sailboats while there.

Re: 12 Gallon fuel tanks

Boat is slipped in Corpus.

For purposes of this forum, I think that best describes our sailing venue.

Our other residences really aren't anyone's business.

Re: 12 Gallon fuel tanks

The new tank fits fine under the seats in our :macm:

If I recall, they have slightly lower capacity than the originals and may be a little wider.

We use a piece of sunbrella to protect the tank from solar damage when not in use.
