Re: Buying a 1989 26D

The rudder showed up yesterday; it was well packaged and on time. The bottom has this swept trailing edge, which I find interesting. I assume this reduces turbulence on the trailing edge of the tip. This is the fiberglass version, not the HDPE version. https://i.postimg.cc/NKXHhCSS/rudder5.jpg The s...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

That’s quite a haul! You’ve got some great projects lined up there! I enjoy working on the boat so it is a labor of love. I got to climb around on Todd & Cheryl's 26D, which is the same year as mine to check out how they had it set up. He rescued that one from sitting in the water for a decade ...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

Parts are filtering in, and I'm anxiously awaiting warm weather to work on the boat. The Rolly Tasker Main & hank-on Big Jib along with the Stackpack for the main storage on the boom. https://i.postimg.cc/ykCxqbhf/sails.jpg Assortment of parts. I'm impressed with the quality of the Garhauer bloc...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

The Lewman clutches are super! They leave all the older designs in the dust. Those deck organizers look nice and trim and the price is good. I have no experience with the deck block, but the specs look like they are well-suited for the load. It's been fun following your saga. Keep posting! I'll hav...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

I finalized buying 95% of the goodies for my Mac26D refit today. My Autopilot arrived this week too. It has been too cold to do any of the fiberglass work so I've mainly been wet sanding the hull and cleaning her out and doing a lot of thinking about how I'm going to mount the various bits. The only...

Re: What would happen if I fell overboard? (Single handing)

My take aways were pretty much what’s been stated above. 1. Stay on the boat. I got punted off by the boom in an accidental gybe. A short tether would have kept me on the boat, but might have resulted in my getting hurt while serving as the main sheet. I think I would have preferred staying on the ...

Re: What would happen if I fell overboard? (Single handing)

You have better circumstances than we do. Our water is such that you have about 30 minutes to function relatively normally. If someone can fish you out, you have about an hour in the water to make it out alive. My working assumption is that if I go overboard when I'm alone, my wife will be collectin...

Re: So... I wondered what AI had to say about the MacGregor....

When you use it as designed, it is remarkable. Just for giggles I asked it about my 26D. The MacGregor 26D (Daggerboard model) is a favorite among sailors for several reasons, thanks to its unique design and features. Here’s why it stands out: etc. etc. Did you ask ChatGPT to write a sales brochure...

I enjoy asking it questions about when it will decide to eradicate humanity.

When you use it as designed, it is remarkable. Just for giggles I asked it about my 26D. Conclusion: If you’re looking for an affordable, trailerable sailboat with good sailing performance and the ability to handle a range of conditions with proper planning, the MacGregor 26D is an excellent choice....

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

The new LiFePO4 battery arrived today. A full 100aH and it is tiny compared to the lead acid monster I pulled out. A full 35lbs less than the lead acid monster and a massive improvement in capacity and cycle life. As with everything in this brave new age, you can see capacity, discharge rates, and ...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

Say I want it pointed into the wind running off the motor while I take sails up/down, it will stay pointed on the wind even if the wind shifts. Now that's pretty cool right there. I've read through the manuals, and the degree of customization is impressive. Custom profiles are the cool feature in m...

Re: Buying a 1989 26D

In theory, it is pretty cool. I'll give you the scoop on the reality. :) The wind indicator is broadcast via Bluetooth, and I can view that on my phone via a standard software interface, in the Pcnautic interface, or OpenCPN. I'm anticipating lots of tinkering to figure out what works best for me. B...
