Re: Whitecaps At Midnight, Second Night On Our 26X

The anchor and rode shown in the video around 9:00 will hold a 26X in sand or "thick" mud under any conditions that the boat has any business being out in IF it is set properly with at least a 7:1 scope. Setting a "Danforth" properly requires backing down on the anchor after it ...

Re: Whitecaps At Midnight, Second Night On Our 26X

You MUST trust your anchor and tackle, if you don't, then replace it with bigger and better until you do trust it. Next, download a free anchor alarm app to your phone and tablet, test it, some are crap, others are good, you can test it on dry land just walking, when you trust it set the anchor, se...

Re: Whitecaps At Midnight, Second Night On Our 26X

You have some detective work to do there. I assume the lithium packs are temporary and you will be installing a proper house battery. The previous owner did some janky stuff to sell the boat. eg: Connecting BOTH 1/2/All wires to the starter battery. I would NOT trust that little solar controller to...

Re: Whitecaps At Midnight, Second Night On Our 26X

Ahh.... from the photo is appears there was once another "house" battery next to the motor starter battery. Hence the 1/2/All switch. I'm totally confused from your video how the "house" loads are connected. It looks similar to my solar controller where it has an extra set of co...

Re: Whitecaps At Midnight, Second Night On Our 26X

Nice trip out. Seems like you learn much from it. Blue Water Yachts will have a new furler luff kit https://shop.bwyachts.com/product-p/3602-110.htm That electrical setup needs some TLC. A proper switch panel would be nice rather than just a fuse block. What is connected to your outboard? I don't k...

Re: Happy Thanksgiving 2024!

Thanks to everyone for their advice our first month here! Thanksgiving dinner was good, but honestly the meals we had the prior two days at Navajo establishments were amazing. As in the Thanksgiving story, we've got lots more to learn.

Whitecaps At Midnight, Second Night On Our 26X

We fit in a quick second trip up to Lake Powell over the four days before Thanksgiving, about a 6 hour drive each way from Tucson. It was a bit more of an adventure then we had planned on, but this Thanksgiving we're thankful for the reliability of a 28 year old Nissan two stroke, good advice on add...

Re: New Macgregor owners wake up on their new project boat

You have some good purchases. Keeping ballast where it should be and raising the mast with sails should be a priority. Especially if you want to use the boat as a sailboat. The stock potable freshwater system is pretty primitive. Many of us have found better ways. Searching this forum will provide ...

Re: New Macgregor owners wake up on their new project boat

Thanks all, I went ahead and placed a BWY order for the parts I think we need right off the bat; Transom valve seal, don't think this is where the leak is as nothing was running out until I opened it, but all gaskets at once is good practice. Center valve gasket set, I suspect this is the culprit as...

Re: New Macgregor owners wake up on their new project boat

How do you like the genoa over jib? The guy that showed me his Sunbrella protected jib said he regretted not getting a 150 genoa instead and just using it partially furled as a standard jib when in heavier winds, which swayed me in going that direction. I ONLY use the 150 now. We do mountain lake s...

Re: New Macgregor owners wake up on their new project boat

It sounds like the engine and steering are all in great shape. A new primer bulb will be stiff but it's a "good" stiff, not old, cracked, and dried out stiff. Adding a short length (6' or so) of chain will make setting the anchor easier. The shaft of the anchor needs to be more horizontal...

Re: New Macgregor owners wake up on their new project boat

Wow, it sounds like you lucked out with the motor being kept maintained. That headsail looks kaput. It looks like there was no sun protection. It would be fun to unfurl it and see what the rest looks like. You'll have to do that to change it anyway. I bought my boat and headsail from BWY and it cam...

Re: New Macgregor owners wake up on their new project boat

Congratulations and welcome! It looks like you have a real jewel there. Don't worry about the ballast filling. It could be a bad seal on the valve (easy, inexpensive fix), or it is possible that you just did not have it closed all the way. The vent in the v-berth did not cause the problem. If you n...

Re: New Macgregor owners wake up on their new project boat

Welcome! Nice video. It explains much more than words in a post. You sure have some work ahead, but it seems you have a good plan. The boat looks great. The problem seems to be time and the sun have taken a toll on canvas. Assuming the boat has been sitting for a while (sails rotted), I would assum...
