Re: Mac Main Sail furler-anyone installed?

This is a MUST HAVE addition for me next season. Bob What is it that you like about the RF main. For easy reefing or easy raising/lowering? 1) Too old to ride my cabin top 2) Winds At 8,450' altitude require multiple reef tie in--see #1 3) I am 50/50 solo--see #1 4) I replaced 7 slugs the last time...

Re: Mac Main Sail furler-anyone installed?

I've done a lot of research on the boom reefing and the mast reefing furlers...any reason you decided on boom rather than mast ? I'll anxiously be waiting to monitor your replies to this post also... T I believe the mast system will negate the draft of the sail while reefed. Those systems also add ...

Mac Main Sail furler-anyone installed?

I'm looking to install a boom mounted main sail reefing system. Any info on the Mac system will be helpful.

Re: cabintop fairleads for higher pointing

Don' mean to hijack the thread, I use a 110 jib. I move the cars forward in light winds and back n strong wind. Am. Doing this right? I can not believe the amount of adjustments on that track. I just go all the way up or back. What do you guys do with that car. Sight along the jib sheets imaginary ...

Re: tacking

As said above, once the bow passes thru the eye of the wind, let the jib back wind for a second or less, then slowly harden up the new leeward sheet. Once the new tack is established, harden the sheet for wind conditions. If you harden up too fast the jib will be too flat to power the boat thru the ...

Re: constantly rounding up in fresh winds

X2 with a split backstay-the X mast is extremely light weight and easy to bend. Falling off to leeward is a common trait for a single stay mounted in factory mounted X fashion. I split mine with two (2) 4:1 Garhauer Vangs-each to a bail at the top of the mast to work the mast to suit wind conditions...

Re: constantly rounding up in fresh winds

Well today was a whole different can of wax! You know, I keep getting conflicting advice about where to set the main. A lot of people seem to feel that the main should almost always be sheeted in almost to the centreline, even on a beam reach. But I'd first learned to have the main sheet out at a g...

Re: constantly rounding up in fresh winds

New sails will add more drive and less heeling--easier to tack--the Doyles Roger sold us were Doyle's bottom of the line
economy priced suitable for S. Cals moderate conditions-the birth place of the Mac with a 3-5 yr. useful sail life before bagging out..

Re: constantly rounding up in fresh winds

In addition to all of the above, since the X does not have a traveler it is important to have a strong boom vang to keep the boom from rising and creating too much bag in the main as you dump the main sheet-thus over powering the main. If you are still equipped with the original oem Doyle sails you ...

Re: running boards amidships?

I have toyed with the idea of installing s/s bathroom 3-4' handicap shower/tub hand railings to extend the width of the cockpit combings for hiking out. They might work with some non-skid for your app.

Re: Got in some trouble in rough seas.. What'd i do?

Sailing on high mountain lakes with major down drafts that can rotate 180 degs and produce very steep sided waves with 25-30 knot winds has taught me to rely on broad and beam reaches regardless of wind conditions. Executing gybes in all weather conditions instills crew confidence and knowledge that...

Re: Ultra-light air performance

Anothe method of getting the sails too fill is to "roll tack" the Mac,moving the crew quickly to leeward with the main centered and medium flat, and not changing the rudder position. The induced wind on the sails will move the boat. You can beat down the fairway picking up .5 to 1.0 kts. A...

That furler might be the ticket for furling a chute or a genaker but a poor choice for a Mac 26.
