Re: Keel Strength
The forces that I was concerened about were the side forces of the water against the keel not the weight. The stress IMO would be concentrated where the keel exits the trunk, like trying to break it off. I would guess the hull would fail before the keel.

Re: How does a 26X sit when drying out?
Just dont make the mistake I did. I pulled the V22 up on the beach on an afternoon high tide. Next high tide would be in the morning so it was perfect for an over night stay. Well I did not check the elevations of the tides. It seamed that the mornings high tide was over 2 feet lower then the previo...

Keel Strength
OK not to start another keel thread but, OK I guess I will do just that. I was out in the ICW this weekend and severial large fishing boats passed me on there way in from the guldstream. These guys spend a lot of time on the water and think they own it and dont worry too much about their wakes aroun...

Re: I hate the rudder
I am re-thinking this thread. I have had just a couple sails this season and again the rudder has shown its ugly head. Here are the problems. 1. When rudder is up can't get it to go down with out pushing on it with something. 2. When its down can't get it to raise up. 3. The rope to raise and lower ...

Re: Help me find a used keel
I own a machine/weld/fiberglass shop and could build a keel fairly easly. I have not priced it out but I think you're looking at close to $750-$1000 in material alone. I would not sell it to my own mother for less then $1500-$2000. It would be even higher if I was trying to make money at it. Maybe i...

Re: Cast Iron Swing Keel
Here is a picture of my keel. you can see the pivot bolt hole pretty clearly. Personaly I dont see it breaking here. I would think it very interesting to see one of these lost keels.

V22 Galley
I have not used the galley as of yet in my V22. I am thinking of getting it out of the garage and setting it up. Looks like it is supposed to slide back under the cockpit when not in use. But there are no rails or anything for it to slide on. Also the pump is long since rotted away so I will need to...

Re: Progress V2-22
Sounds like a normal days sailing to me. Add in a couple of groundings and a snagged crab pot or two and I would have thought you were on my boat.

Working with old sails
Its been a little while since my last post, but I put my V222 in the water a few weeks ago and plan to spend lots of time on it this summer. My thoughts here are about the sails. I have the original 30+ year old Macgregor sails, main, Jib and storm Jib. My sails are very baggy but otherwise in relat...

Re: New Venture 23 owner with a couple of questions
That boat looks to be in great shape. As for the keel I have removed mine and have some words of advice. First congrats on the cast iron keel. These are far superior to the steel/fiberglass keels some boats had. Second your boat looks so well cared for I would inspect the keel and if all is well, le...

Re: Keel Lock Down Bolt
Based on the discussion here, I would say the macgregor manual was wrong to suggest lowering the keel with bolt in place. Also the only reported damage in this area has been a result in following the manuals advice. There has been a lot of speculation of what might happen in certain situations I.e. ...

Re: Towing Alaska to Mexico
From my younger years of towing a travel trailer around the country, i would say there is more to worry about in your tow vehicle then the trailer. Number one being your cooling system. I would assume you are using a full size truck or suv. If its fairly new probably not a problem, but if its more t...

Re: Best transom height for long shaft kicker?
I have a Nissan 9.8 with extra long shaft. Looks to be about 26" from top of motor bracket (transom) to water line. Works great but does come out of water in rough seas and large wakes. If I mounted it any lower the hand control would hit the transom.
