CDI main furler

Has anyone ordered and installed the CDI main furler system on a MacGregor 26X? I am aware of the do-it-yourself version on the mods page.

I've got a 26X and although my boat normally stays dry, if I ever get water in the bilge it is in the galley-battery compartment area. That's the low point. 1. Seal the shroud attachment chainplate areas and anything else on that side of the boat with windshield silicone sealant. 2. Sprinkle some ta...

We have a 12.5' AB RIB console tender with a Yamaha 40hp ES/tilt. We've never towed it behind the Mac but it would probably tow fine. It's faster than the 26X and uses more fuel than the Mac. It will hit 30mph with a light load.

I agree with not overcomplicating things. We have the following lines led aft: - main halyard and jib halyard on starboard side through clutches. - centerboard line on starboard to a jam cleat. - Main downhaul to starboard side- no cleat, just a velcro line tender. - Furler on port side to a jam cle...

If you release any backstay tension the mast should be straight. If it leans near the top, the upper shroud is tighter on that side. http://www3.telus.net/harbro/tuning.htm and http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/articles/index.cgi/noframes/read/92 are good standby guides if you haven't read them ye...

I'll try to answer all the questions in 1 post. Boy - that would have been cool to be on board when that hit... Might not have been cool- maybe toasty or shocking. Wow, can you tell where the lightning went to the water? sounds like through the sink drains. But I would inspect the centerboard cable ...

A good way to control rust is to use a Permatex product called Rust Treatment (used to be called Extend). It works best on something that has rust on it. Just brush/wipe off any loose rust and then spray or wipe this product on. It will dry to a black oxidized finish. Then you can leave it that way ...

I'll second the method of backing up to the mooring. I have just attached a spare line to the ball and walked it to the bow and tied it off. I use a single line so we weathervane along with all the other boats. Centerboard up so it's quiet, rudders down to dampen movement. For casting off, reverse p...

Don't worry about the moving up thing. What's important is that you have an understanding of the theory of sailing, and boat handling. My wife and I sailed only a Sunfish (14') for 25 years but I had learned to read the wind and the mainsail pretty well. I also had decades of experience with ski boa...

Lightning strike - not theory!

Remember all the theoretical discussions about lightning strikes. Now I have first hand experience on the Mac26X. We were not on the boat and it was in our marina slip. There are only 2 sailboats in our marina, similar mast height. Our area had thunderstorms last week with a lot of lightning. I was ...

Here's another take. Gas will store pretty well when cold. I can leave gas in the tank, or even the Honda 50 in the winter (up north) with no problems. The same fuel does not store well at higher temperatures. And, the smaller the quantity, the faster it degrades (like in the carb fuel bowl). Gas st...

I have a 2001 X that has spent the summers in my slip on Lake Erie since 2001. We use VC offShore, 3 coats first year, touchup second year, recoat alternate years. I have never done the barrier coat. I have had no problems with osmosis or bubbles.

I enjoyed reading the "back and fill". I'll try it with the Honda 50. My guess is don't expect as much prop walk on the outboards on our boats. Even the Honda 50 has a smaller prop than a geared down diesel. I rented a keel boat for a weekend many years ago. It had a 7.5 Evinrude for a kic...
