Re: What would happen if I fell overboard? (Single handing)

I have never heard of the term "Ray Line", yet, I have two. In fact I consider Ray lines essential. Years ago, on this site, I read about tying a line from the bow to the stern cleat for docking. I use it quite frequently in the following manner. I approach the dock slowly, and pull up to ...

Re: Rudders again

Is the weather bad in Steinhatchee? Is that why you have so much time on your hands? Up here in Philly, we quite literally had snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain yesterday; some of which were at the same time. We depend on your sailing escapades. Close the computer, get out of the chair and go on ...

Just my opinion and I’d love to see this explored more by our community
….

You forgot to add “of engineers”. :D

Me, I turn the wheel to the left, the boat turns to port, I’m happy. 8)

Re: Prodigal returns - and other stuff

Terrific to see you back vizwhiz; not so terrific that you’re leaving. Yes, the classified section is still here, still not costing anything. I believe you have to register to place an add. When you have a sale for the boat, remember to give a small donation to the site; it helps keeping it going. C...

Re: 26x Calm wind sailing technique survey.

Jimmy,

The way that sail filled, it looked like a nice little breeze, and yes, that lack of outboard will make a difference.

Re: 26x Calm wind sailing technique survey.

Excellent post. One that should be read by all, either as important information for new owners, or, as reenforcing knowledge for those indoors during the long period of non sailing season. :D First of all, welcome aboard! A three mile-long lake is fine for sailing; the half-mile wide part may be a b...

Re: What would happen if I fell overboard? (Single handing)

Good question Kurz.

It may be time for a poll. Who has heard of a capsized Mac with a full ballast? Emphasis on FULL ballast. If there were, it must be rare. Of course, rarity does not mean to not take precautions.

Re: 26x Calm wind sailing technique survey.

One other important point; don’t just point into the wind when you go on deck, release the mainsheet so the main just continually points into the wind. Just as important, stay lower than the swinging boom  Really, stay low. If you have a tether for your PFD, and a line bow to stern to hook it ...

Re: 26x Calm wind sailing technique survey.

If the winds are light, a jib, by itself may not be enough. Light winds need more canvas to move the boat. Jib and main. If the winds are light enough, you could use a 150 genoa instead of a jib.

How light are the winds?
How small is this lake?

Re: Upgraded blue water rudder brackets?

Ix, I could be wrong, but I believe there is a difference in the sailing you do in the Keys, and Jimmy’s sailing from Puerto Rico to the Virgin Islands. Open ocean sailing for long distances places a lot more stress on the rudders. That was one of the challenges for Madd Mike’s planning for going to...

On our trips, the three apps I use to find transient slips are Snag-A-Slip, Dockwa, & Safe Harbor. Mostly Dockwa and Snag-A-Slip.

If you are a member of BOATUS, ask the marinas if a discount is given to members.

Re: Upgraded blue water rudder brackets?

This thread reminded me of Madd Mike. For awhile, he was thinking about taking Xenons Arrow across the Pacific for a trip to Hawaii. He mentioned that the rudders would need some reinforcements Chinook has posted this: " I remember some of his last posts were talking about trying to sail his bo...

I am remembering two other things that Rick said.

(1) Rocky bottom with low tides.
(2) His wife was Larry Flint's assistant.
