Re: Planing

In my 2000 X with its Honda 50, and several hundred pounds of gear stowed, I have been able to reach just shy of 14 knots. Prop choice might be an issue. Are you sure you are able to open it all the way up? Mine comes pretty close to banging into the pedestal rail when full out. Throttle cable tuned...

What line do you use for MRS?

I used to go for the 4:1 boom vang, but have started using the 4:1 mainsheet because it has a very convenient built-in cleat to hold the mast where I want it while I run back to disentangle shrouds n such. Then one day, in the middle of the season, I decided the main sheet was far longer than it nee...

Re: Swing Keel rope replacement

The red tape on the up and down positions caught my eye, but I had to see it a few of times to realize that their positions meant the board was down. I was convinced that it was up, and my brain read the tape positions as up just so that I would agree with myself, it seems. Odd. My board line is on...

Re: Swing Keel rope replacement

Am I the first one to point out that calling any line on a boat a "rope" will get you keelhauled? :D

(Definition of a "line": a rope with a job. :) )

Re: 26X main sail slider question

Only loosely related, but if you're having trouble getting your mainsail down, might I suggest a downhaul?

I lashed a 1/8" line from the head clew down the mast to a block at the base, then back to a clam cleat next to the vang cleat.

Bringing the sail down is a cinch.

What is causing this alarm on my Honda O/B?'

Hm. I just had my engine tuned and lubed at the local mechanic. If I hadn't had an incident-free milk run from public ramp to yacht club, I'd immediately suspect they'd forgotten something. As, it is, I think I'll call them first thing next week and ask if maybe they missed something. But before I d...

Re: Mystery Crack and Leak. Mac 26x

1) Motor cable entry. You can place a second, larger boot over the original tiny one, and that worked for me. 2) Rubrail. I caulked the entire rubrail with black outdoor caulk and it stopped a bunch of leaks. 3) Chainplates. Need to remove the rivets and the cap plate, reseal, and reinstall the cap...

What is causing this alarm on my Honda O/B?'

It starts an electronic squealing the moment I turn the key in the ignition until the moment I take it out. Coming directly from the gearshifter in the pedestal. First day I put it in the water, it was fine. Motored over to my club. Next day when I took it out for a milk run, it was low on charge - ...

Re: Ideas for trailer bunks

Use carriage bolts, from the top down. Counterbore the holes so the heads are well below the surface, test fit them, then remove and carpet them with the bolts hanging out the bottom. If the wood splits years down the road, the bolts can drop lower through the holes. But they'd have to really come ...

Ideas for trailer bunks

The bolts holding the factory trailer bunks finally rusted through. Now the bunks (2x4s) just fall off willy-nilly. I'm thinking about how to rebuild the bucks. I'll just use 2x4s again, with carpet stapled on, but how about attaching them to the trailer? I'd like to avoid screws or bolts sticking u...

Re: Honda BF50 "kicking" in reverse

Well, my "guy" came to take my trailer back to his shop. One wheel was seized just enough that, without the weight of the boat, it just dragged - he had to take the brake pads out so it would spin freely. And he jammed a rod into the tongue to stop the cylinder from activating when stopping. There i...

Re: Honda BF50 "kicking" in reverse

Update: Good news: FINALLY IN THE WATER! SUMMER BEGINS! :) Pretty much the third boat at my club to be in the water with stick up. It's kind of spooky quiet. It was nice to be out on the lake tho. I pretty much had it all to myself. Bad news: $400 later, and my gear shift is no better. Still jumps ...

Re: Honda BF50 "kicking" in reverse

#1 a wheel bearing failure is a way more catastrophic an event "think " of a wheel flying off going down the road & what that could detail ? plus now u r draggin ur boat & trl frame on the ground while maybe sliding into a ditch or another car ? No one mentioned anything about bearing failure. #2 A...

Re: Honda BF50 "kicking" in reverse

I am thinking of doing a trailer mod similar to this to eliminate the hull brake. Yep. Me too. Though I plan to secure it to the trailer runners directly. That will aid in centering the boat. The boat is heavy enough to bend the fender out of alignment when bumping about on the road, which is what ...
