Macgregor used an off-the-shelf components for their trailers, so parts aren’t usually hard to find. From what I can tell, looking at your pictures, it looks like the trailer axle spindle has failed. That’s the part that holds the bearings for the wheel. If that’s the case, you could Google “trailer torsion axle spindle” and you’ll find a host of companies offering that product. I would measure yours carefully and then call them and ask if they have a similar replacement.

Hi Damir!

Sorry to see you’ve had trouble with your axle.
Looks like your style is the mono arm type where the spindle and arm are one piece.
If I may make a suggestion……. Nothing lasts forever, especially trailer stuff.
You might want to consider the vintage of your trailer and it’s torsion axle and figure out a way for you to safely and throughly inspect it from one side to the other. You may find there are other latent issues that will need to be addressed such as mounting bolts and the axle itself.

From my own experiences over time I’d suggest that if the actual axle is sound that you plan on replacing the spindle arms, hubs, bearings and seals for BOTH sides. I suspect that if you were to take apart the other side wheel assembly, clean and inspect it you will probably find it has issues as well. Your gonna need a new hub/bearing assembly on you currently failed side anyway so you might be best to bite the bullet and get the other side rebuilt at the same time.

As this is going to be a bit of work to accomplish and depending on your circumstances and time availability might I make the suggestion to replace the entire axle & hubs assembly with a new one? You may find it’s a lot less time consuming, less hassle, simpler and overall cost effective as well. There are several on-line trailer supply houses that provide good reasonably priced replacement assemblies. That would reset the clock as it were and give you peace of mind into the future.

In our own relatively recent experience a couple of years ago with a bearing failure on our dual axle trailer this was the case and was well worth it. The difference in cost to replace the hub assembly and spindle on just one side, the bearings/seals on the other vs. replacing the entire axle/hub assembly was only about 50% more and took about the same amount (or less) of time. Serendipitously, We also found one of the U-bolts holding the axle to frame had a crack in the thread form that we would not have found had we not been replacing the assembly. So even better.

Of course these are only suggestions and your situation, circumstances and decisions are unique to you.

Best Regards,

Thank you very much. I did not specify that this breakdown occurred due to the wheel hitting a concrete block while driving. It was my stupid mistake. My boat is in Russia, so it will not be possible to repair it in the USA. I want to order the necessary spare parts from the USA.

Damir,

Kevin, as usual, is spot on when it comes to mechanical questions. You're in southwest Russia, and shipping charges from the U.S. are going to be high. Would it be cheaper getting parts from the UK, or Germany? Thousands of miles closer. The parts needed are not boat parts specific to MacGregors, but rather generic trailer parts.

When the weather is nicer, please post photos of your :macm: , and of where you sail; the Volga? This is the friendliest forum on the WWW. We enjoy seeing Mac’s in use around the world.

Yes, it will be cheaper to bring spare parts from Germany. I sail on the Volga and Kama rivers. Next season I want to cross Lake Ladoga to Karelia

1) What is the name of your boat?
2) When you do cross Lake Ladoga, post photos.

I just noticed that your Genoa on a roller furler has black stripes. Is that black strip UV protection? If so, is the Genoa wrapped in the wrong direction?
If it is a UV protection strip, there should be very little white visible. If not so, never mind :D

The name of my boat is DAROLI. It is an abbreviation of the first letters of the names of my family members.
