M26 built with epoxy or polyester?

Post by kurz »

Hi all
simple question:
Are our :macm: built with epoxy or polyester?

Is all the same material? Inner outside hull?

Inner seems very black...

Thank - kurz

They are built with polyester resin. Much like nearly all production boats. Most likely the cheapest resin available. Same with the Gelcoats. I’ve seen 30 year old Catalina’s with better Gelcoats than my boat.

Hi Kurz

Yes the Majority of a MacGregor will be fabricated using polyester resin.
You may find patches to be epoxy resin as it is more commonly available at hardware and utility stores and cures quickly.

Epoxy can be added to polyester but polyester can not be added to epoxy. Sort of a one way street chemically.

Polyester it a good resin, is relatively inexpensive and has a longer working time than epoxy generally.
Ambient Temperature and activator quantity come into play ….

Hi kurz,
The M26 is typically built with polyester resin, though some models might have epoxy used in specific areas. The black interior is likely due to the use of a black gel coat or a different type of resin layer. The outer hull is usually polyester, while the interior could vary depending on the manufacturer’s choices for reinforcement and finish. Hope this helps!

The bill of materials used to manufacture Mac 26X boats specifies H834 resin, which is a polyester resin designed specifically for boats.
