If you cant afford anything to go wrong, dont do it. If you do it yourself, things will go wrong, it will cost a lot more money than expected and unless you are extremely lucky or have done it before it will probably become another horror story. We have imported a bunch of 2nd hand boats (Mac and other kinds) for customers (as well as many new ones of course). We can import it for you, but it will cost you!
Good luck,
Cameron

When I imported my Mac 26M the end freight price was 20% more than originally quoted and than the delayed delivery of about 4 weeks.

Many thanks for the advice, I think the local option is the best for me.
Looks like I will just have to wait until I can afford a local mac.

Get a Marine surveyor to do an inspection, well worth it for your sanity, we used AWS in Sydney, have a talk to them, they might handle the West Coast as well or be able to recommend someone.
My main whinge was with Oz Customs, they seem to have gone out of their way to irritate us by delaying the inspection to the point that we were charge a container rental fee.
Would we import again ... yes .. in a heart beat, possibly a red '70's Mustang.

Orac.
I Import used Macs, and for what it is worth, the prices here in Australia are dropping.
A 2002 26X should sell for around $38k, a 2003-4 26M should sell for around $46k, a 2006-7 26M around $49k, so it's not like the 'good old days', as those that do it for a living do it for a ' % margin'.
If you do decide to import, then follow the administrative rules to 'the letter'.
Every Govt Dept you come in contact with, will carry out their role with 100% transparency and efficiency within the time frame they tell you.
Good luck.
Cheers

Orac,
I used the same broker and shipping agent as Phillip. The broker was great, so was the shipping agent in the USA. it was the shipping agent here in Oz that charged me more than quoted. I also agree that the custom agents here are not the easiest to deal with. i can relate some stories regarding that.
Would I do it again? Depending on the exchange rate and extras on the boat, probably Yes. Oh, and don;t forget the registration here in OZ for boat and trailer, also not that an easy step.
