Where to store cabin door?
Where is the best place to store the big cabin door ?
We find it's always in the way. Does anyone have a nice mod
for this? We've thought about attaching it to ceiling but then
there's even less headroom. Thanks!!

Re: Where to store cabin door?
Many folks store it vertically under the helm seat. It also helps reduce engine noise in that position.

Re: Where to store cabin door?
I once came across a cabin door or companionway hatch floating in the water out in the middle of nowhere. There were no boats around or any obvious owners that I could see. I recognized what it was as soon as I saw it, as I didn't think they actually floated.
My original companionway hatch is now a set of screens or a set of plexiglass. I can also mix and match. The screens are here:

Re: Where to store cabin door?
Mine is stored in my shed at home.
I got so sick of banging that giant thing around in the cabin that I built my own 2-part main hatch out of mahogany.
Biggest mod I've made to my boat in 5 years. Very happy with it. And proud too.

Now that is an interesting idea...kmclemore wrote:Many folks store it vertically under the helm seat. It also helps reduce engine noise in that position.
Gonna see how feasible that is. Engine noise really bugs me.

Re: Where to store cabin door?
Storing the hatch under the helm seat is do-able, but it's not a perfect fit. It only works one way (can't remember if it's with the smooth side facing in or out), and it has to be properly angled. When the seat comes down on it, the hatch is about an eight of an inch too high for a perfect fit and the seat fiberglass and hinge mount bends just a bit.
Then you have to remember that it's there, because if you lift the helm seat for any reason the hatch cover falls onto the motor. I haven't lost the hatch cover yet, but it feels like a close call each time I do it. And watch the fuel lines.
It's a bit tricky to get it in there properly, but for us it's by far the best place to put it.

Re: Where to store cabin door?
I just went down to my
and checked and it stores perfectly under the seat. It is held in place by the fittings from the mast support. Must try that next time I'm out. I cannot see any risk for it falling overboard, but I will secure it with a piece of string

I cut mine in half ....stores much easier
Re: Where to store cabin door?
Thank you all so much for the different ideas!!!
It never crossed our mind to try storing it under the seat by motor!
We'll give that a go since that's completely out of the way!!

The X cabin door is such a large bit of real estate it could almost have its own zip code, making a two part door is on the jobs list, not sure I will get to it this winter as there is more pressing things but it on there.
With the open transom having a board to block the water from cascading into the cabin if we take a wave over the back is pretty important IMHO

Re: Where to store cabin door?
We carry a Engel 12/120 volt fridge just aft of the battery compartment/seat which is just aft of the galley in our 2003 X. The complete companion way door slides on edge, small end in first between the fridge and the drop down in the fiberglass of the companion way. We used it that way when we lived on the boat for over 8 months. It never moves from this spot until we take it out ourselves. We only installed the door when we left the boat for a couple of hours. We had a snap in door way with screen/ solid sunbrella that we used each night to keep the dew or rain out. We have a starboard piece that fits under the drivers seat which stops stuff from leaving the boat or entering the boat.

Re: Where to store cabin door?
I leave it on the large berth under the cockpit.

What the hull kind of sailing do you do that this is a real concern??sailboatmike wrote:With the open transom having a board to block the water from cascading into the cabin if we take a wave over the back is pretty important IMHO
It would have to break over the transom, over the lip into the cockpit, and then/i] over the lip into the cabin!

We sail on the sea not a lake, if you get a following sea this can happen easily
