PAINTED ON NAME REMOVAL

Post by sailpsych »

Currently our boat (just purchased last month) has a name we'd like to change. The name currently on the boat was painted on. What is the best route to remove the name? Got a quote of $200 to remove it from a boat name painting specialist. I've heard oven cleaner works, but would hate to think of the potential damage to the finish.

Thanks in advance.

Test some hot reducer on a hidden patch of fiberglass and if it doesnt melt your glass rub away.

Then 600 grit, wet sanding and once it's gone, start using 800...1000...1200....1500...2000....rubbing compound....polishing compound...viola.

Here's a couple links that recommend the Oven Cleaner approach:
http://marinersguide.com/gas/name.html
http://www.boatered.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=56770
http://thehulltruth.net/forums/thread-v ... 35&posts=3

and another where it didn't remove the type of paint used, but that was the only ill effect:

Good luck.

Success!!! The oven cleaner worked like a charm and with the white vinegar no residual yellowing. I'll need to use a bit of rubbing compound on it, but it was due to have some attention anyway.

Thanks to all concerned.

ParadoX is on her way to becoming ParadoX!!
