In-boom reefing lines

Post by delevi »

I am quite happy with my current single-line reefing setup x2 (2 reef points) with respect to its designed job. What I am a bit annoyed by is the huge amount of line hanging off the boom when the sail is flaked, as well as having to make small adjustments so it doesn't sag off when unreefed. I'm considering running the lines inside the boom. I'm concerned, however that they may bind up inside the boom, which could potentially be a disaster. Can't exactly untangle line that you don't have access to. Any thoughts?

Fair winds,
Leon

I would run tubes inside the boom, and run your lines inside the tubes.

Try to get that tangled!

I am about to copy you're lay out and will handle the sagging lines over possible jams in the boom. I am looking at that issue too but I copied Mike C's outhaul and so I'm limited on anything in the boom.

Is it really that messing when the sail is flaked, there must be some simple way to organize the lines, well??

I will put my Gearbox head to work on that issue, as I plan to have that mod done this spring.

Brian,
I basically do a wrap or two around the boom & sail with the excess line and tie off with a couple of sail ties. It's just more spaghetti to deal with. The part near the end of the boom can be a bit of a nuisance. Also, when hoisted and not reefed, some line will sag under the boom. It's a delicate issue tightening it up, since doing so will add unwanted tension to the reef clews. No perfect solution except running lines into the boom, which of course isn't perfect for risk of jamming. :|

Geoff,

Where would one get some of these handy tubes, and what's to keep them from moving around foe and aft? I would imagine that they have to be a bit shorter than the line length to avoid friction as the line exits the boom and keeping the tube itself from jamming into the exit block. :o

With your admiral singing such endearing songs to you, I'm surprised you have time to think about sailing, etc.. :D :P

Smoke and mirrors dude...

I would figure out what size you need, then go to Home Depot or such and buy some kind of tubing. Try electrical section or pluming. Might even find what you are looking for in the gardening section, sprinkler system etc. To attach the tubing to the inside of the boom, you could always use a rivet gun from the outside of the boom. I figure you would only need one tack point at the front and one at the back per tube.

It is the best thing I can think of to keep the lines from binding on something if they were left free inside your boom.

Cheers

It's actually a good idea. Might be a slight reach to rivet a plastic tube but I'll think of something. Ah, the things I find to occupy my mind when I can't sleep at night.
