Ive found you just drop it (12 lb maybe??) off the back and it does exactly as intended - stops hunting, but will still let the boat swing with the rest of the boats....

...and as a side benefit, when we sail out of cuttyhunk, I leave the tender on the mushroom at my anchorage and claim it for my return

(I confess I have never really confirmed the etiquette on doing this, but would welcome comments)

You're probably one of those guys that leaves towels on the beach chair all day at a resort just in case he wants to come back too. ;)

Stephen,

So the 12lb mushroom is all the way down on the bottom?

Is it straight down or do you try to get any scope on the rode? Is tide rise/drop an issue here?

Thanks,
Jim

Just a thought here, has anyone ever used lengths of old fire hose for chafing gear? We used to use it in the Navy and it worked well. For that matter, depending on the size of the line, regular garden hose might work too. Perhaps local fire stations have old hoses they don't need.

What a great idea- - - and I KNOW I can get some from my local volunteer fire department - - - we had a party for them at our house last Dec after our disastrous fires.

Rick :) :macm:

PS See Tang - - - sometimes it pays to be nice to other people - - -OK - - - I admit not often :P 8)

Garden hose works well and so does "soaker" hoses, just remember to cut it in a spiral and wrap it liberally with duct tape or it can be rubbed off. If you want to try and get 3/8 line through 3/8 hose without cutting the hose (or any equal ID diameter hose and OD line) try using dental floss as a pull, I usually use 3 or 4 strands that I have tightly whipped around the end of the line.
The big problem is that when you really need these chaffing bumpers, you removed them because they weren't needed the last time you tied up and they got in the way.
