I replaced the original with a 20" wheel. It's great. When heeled over, I can sit in a side seat and not have to uncomfortably stretch my arm when I handle the wheel.
I didn't find removing the old wheel nearly as tricky as re-attaching the far end of the steering mechanism through the hole, sealing it properly, and replacing the rubber "boot".

Don't see it mentioned above, but I found my wheel just dropped off into my lap. 'Course, that's cause I backed the wheel nut right to the end of the shaft, and then applied a notably sharp hammer-rap onto the end of the steering shaft/nut. The wheel just popped loose from its taper.

When I installed my new Teleflex R&P steering system last Spring the instructions specifically mentioned that this system was for max steering wheel size of 16".

Any of you smart engineering types think an 18" will be problem? Is the issue too much "torque" on the R&P?

I am considering sending more of my money to KH Marine.

Thanks,
Jim

I was wondering the same thing. Yesterday I noticed the black hub the steering wheel says that.

Has been discussed. The :macx: steering hub says 12 inch maximum IIRC. Ive had an 18 inch wheel for 4-5 seasons. Like most things, if used with prudence it will be fine.

The "max diameter" warning on the Teleflex systems seems pretty arbitrary to me.

Obviously there is a max. torque on the steering shaft that the system is designed for, but translating that into a wheel diameter means making big assumptions about how much force a person is going to apply at the rim of the wheel. I'm sure a gorilla could apply more torque to a 12" wheel than a dainty lass would to an 20" (not trying to be either sexist or apeist here ).

The max wheel size is their because of the gear ratio of the r/p system so as not to create an over sensitive system that creates an over steer it is some thing that you can easily adjust too !!!
if you were going to an 24" or higher you would have a very sensitive wheel ?
