Cruising Log of the Murrelet - A fantastic Journey

Post by escape »

If you are not aquainted with this site it is a fantastic account of a couple's long term/ long distance sailing adventures on their Mac 26x. Be sure to scroll the entire page as you read because there is a wealth of information to be gleaned from this couple's thousands of miles of cruising in their beloved Murrelet.

I'm surprised no one else has commented here.

Just remember a few things:

1) If something sounds too good to be true (or flat out ridiculous), it probably is.

2) just because it's posted on the internet, does not make it true.

Don't get me wrong, I love Frank's devotion and zeal, but some of his theories and postulations are just insupportable. I fear that someone who knows nothing about sailing could be dangerously misled if they rely solely on the information on his site.

Oh lord!! Not again. If Frank sees this post it will take months to get him off this board again. I'm convinced Murrelet doesn't actually exist and Frank lives in land-locked Iowa. No one who actually sails would spout what he does.

I actually ran into Frank and Lisa last night at the Seattle boat show. My wife and I swapped Mac stories with them for quite a while over a glass of wine. We originally met them when they attended the San Juan Rendezvous we led in 2003. They are a very nice couple and while some of his theories on Mac design and things can be a bit out there, they certainly make great use of their Mac and the stories of their trips can be very interesting and instructive.

They wave the Mac flag proudly at the Olympia Yacht Club where they now keep their boat.

When I was looking for my :macx: I came across this web site that said this boat was greatest thing. After reading a little while, I thought for sure this guy was nuts. He had taken a lot of grief for that website. He is also really popular over at sailing anarchy I heard. :P

Open ocean crusing on my Mac..... ummm no. Got to love that site though.

We met Frank on Duane's aforementioned trip in 03. Interesting conversations every night. He has done some thoughtful modifications on his X.

On Frank - I havent met him but have to admire his enthusiasm for the Mac. Personally I think he enjoys baiting the SA crowd into a tizzy and they seem to be perfect bait for this, guaranteed to take the bait every time.

Capt Steve - I was all over the world this month but actually spent a couple of days in Ventura and Oxnard last week - promise Ill look you up next time with a pm/em

Some of the posts in this thread are bordering upon personal attack on a member. Please remember that there are some members of this board that have had fantastic, documented adventures with their Macs. As far out there as some of their theories may seem, they are supported in their own eyes by empirical evidence. I'm sure that they would be happy to discuss any particular point on this board openly. We encourage everyone to engage in spirited, but polite debate on these subjects. Attacking the character and veracity of a fellow Mac owner is not the best way to enter into such discussions and will not be allowed.

I certainly agree this board should never be used for personal attacks.

However, I would like to caution anyone new to boating and/or sailing to read Frank's web site with extreme caution.

Over the years he has made multiple posts and claims that are not only outrageous but also dangerous.

I don't care how much he believes in his "theories". There is NO empirical evidence to support some of his more wilder assertions and many simply counter conventional boating safety.

Use THIS site to ask questions about your boat and its abilities. Frank's site is a combination of fact, fiction and fantasy. It is no place for the uninitiated to gain credible boating knowledge.

With that said, he is a pretty funny guy and I do think he believes most of what he states as fact.

I have learned that without photos the creative writing found here is based on one persons true experiences posted by armature writers and it is up to the reader to know what is entertaining experiences and what is creative writing. I enjoy all of it, so every one keep it up.
