I have the Suzuki 50 at 215 lbs. Very quiet, moves the boat at about 15 MPH fully loaded. Cost in 2001 $4600 plus $4-500 installion. The 2000 and 2001 models have a bad heat sensor inside the computor area that gives off a false over-heating warning. It is easly relaced for $20 that you can do yourself.
The X trailor is pretty much max' ed out as it is and adding more weight for a bigger engine has to be considered. The new M boats are OK with the bigger engines but the X needs reinforcement in the stearn.

Actually the new 2 strokes which are fuel injected are quite efficient at low rpms. Unlike the old carbs, they only inject the needed amount of fuel for the given rpm. My low speed fuel efficiency with the 90 is 1.5 times what it was in the old carb'd 50.

In the Tohatsu line the 40 hp and the 50 hp are the twins. No way to go bigger.

The extra 100 lbs my 90 (315 lbs) adds to the trailered weight really doesn't have any effect at all on towing the Mac. I add more weight than that when I put 4 full 6 gallon tanks in the boat (normally we carry these in the truck if we are going any distance).

The X transom is more than strong enough for a larger motor without adding reinforcements. Some X's suffered from a gap between the outer hull and the inner motor well. If your's has that you should put in a filler which is easy to do, but other than that adding extra reinforcement is for peace of mind, not for any structural weakness. There are other parts of the boat you will break before the transom. This is the expert opinion of someone who has installed motors on many hundreds of X's. As always, if you abuse it you can break anything.

I also think the whole WOT top end comparisons are lame. Perhaps where the motor marketing guys boat the conditions are always glass smooth, but where I boat it would be impossible to run at WOT 60% - 70% of the time. And even if I could go that fast I don't because at WOT there is too much noise in the cockpit even with the quietest motor. Add to that the reduced fuel mileage and WOT is reserved only for those few times we are out on the lake with water toys.

For me they biggest benefit of a larger motor is being able to get a fast cruising speed without resorting to WOT. With my 90 I can cruise at 15 knots (17.25 mph) while turning 4500 rpm and still being able to talk in the cockpit. To get this speed with the 50 required WOT at 5800 rpm and a deafening roar. I also get a very quiet and economical (7 Nm per gallon) at 7 knots (8.05 mph). The fact that I can hit 22 knots (25.3 mph) really doesn't matter for our extended cruises, we never go that fast.

Duane,
Know a way to turn the Etec 50 into a 60? The guys who service these engines sure claim they can't. I believe they just won't, even after being offered good compensation. I keep getting the same line about loosing their sholp & federal fine, etc, etc. Can't fault them I gues. The only thing needed is a software reprogram, or perhaps a new computer module. Sure would be nice to unleash those 10 sleeping ponies :)

Ya right,

Know how many mechs I have pleaded with to unlock the 15 ponies hiding under the hood of my 75?

Freekin thing has a 1600cc inline 4 cyl just begging to be reved up. The limiter stops my rpms below that of the spec on the 90.

Yep
Some of these engines can be reprogramed they do it for racing ? but then the history is always their so their goes any warr. you might have ? some you have to change the ecu $2-$3000. grand :o . but if one could find a wrecked eng. for a reasonable price :idea: preferably one that had not been submerged :?: :| . So's ya take ya chance's

it seens Etec 60 cv is the best choice , right? This is the factory choice too.
do you know what is the best propeller for a 26x?

I suspect it's more of a throttle limiter. If you were to put a little prop on there, she would probably rev off the charts. 1600 cc :o Vroom! Vroom!

Jeff @ Arena Yachts was telling me how he was testing a Mac with an Evinrude rep on board who had his laptop hooked up to the engine. With the click of a mouse, they went from 40hp to 50hp. Another click and they were at 60hp. If anyone knows the whereabouts of that laptop, pleas PM me :D

Actually, when I run with the 14x11 vs the 14x13, my limiter kicks in and prevents the engine from going above spec.
