Catalina Rendezvous (July 2009???)
Several people have expressed an interest in making another trip to Two Harbors this summer.
I think there are five probables already, if we can settle on a date. More are certainly welcome. This trip should not be confused with Mike Inmon's gala affair.
I'd want to avoid the July 4th weekend. No other big events are planned for two Harbors in July.
String line reservations can be made starting May 1st.
We had a lot of fun last year. Let's do it again!!!

Re: Catalina Rendezvous (July 2009???)
dennisneal,
Why wait until July?
I'd be up for a trip as soon after they reopen the mast-up storage lot as possible.
I've had my boat at home since Feb 6 doing some small mods.
The wait is killing me.
Late March, early April timeframe sounds like just the ticket to me.
Any thoughts?

I can go earlier than July and live close enough (Long Beach) that it is easier for me than some. July still sounds good though. Any time on the ocean is time taken off our age.

Hardcrab,
"Why wait until July?"
Very good question! I don't have a good answer. I just wanted to get things started.
I figure it may take a month, or two, to allow people to get time off from work.
Also, there's no reason why we can't go more than once.
Progress at the MDR mast-up storage renovation has been almost non-existant, as of last weekend. But, what do I know about these things??
How about a time in May?? Hopefully, the paving should be fininshed by then. My Admiral and I can be available on the weekends of 05/08 or 05/29.
Without a shore power heater, would it be chilly at night at Two Harbors?
On the plus side, there'd be fewer tourists and we could get a guaranteed spot on the string line..
How about a trip in May AND a trip in July AND a trip in September!!
For "First-Timers" this would be a great orientation trip! After making this trip, they could then sail, with some confidence, to the factory's "Catalina Island Armada" event in September, if they wished. "First-Timers" are more than welcome!! For me, the biggest benefit of our event last year is that I feel that I personally know more people on this website!
I'm sure that there are several "Salts" who would agree to "Buddy Up" with a "First-Timer" as you did with me last year.

Rick,
Me, a "Salt"?? Heck No!! I was in the Army!!
I've heard a few "salty" stories. And, I've met a few "Salts". There are probably more than a few on this website.
I don't hold it against them.

Re: Catalina Rendezvous (July 2009???)
I just called the folks at Mast Up and Mar 24 is the projected date to bring boats back to the lot.
Six weeks to repave.
With that in mind, How about an April 3-5 or 17-19 weekend to plan a trip over?

Re: Catalina Rendezvous (July 2009???)
Hardcrab,
April 17 -19 will work for us!
We'll arrive at Marina Del Rey on the morning of Thursday, the 16th, lay over for one night and leave early, (Before 8:00 A.M.), on Friday, the 17th. There should be no problems with availability of spaces on the string line.
We'll return to MDR on the morning of Sunday, April 19th.
Any one else care to chime in??

April 17 through 19 is the weekend of the Long Beach Grand Prix! There will be no way to launch by the Queen Mary in Long Beach that weekend. You can launch from Alamitos Bay, Cabrillo (San Pedro), or Mairina Del Rey.

Re: Catalina Rendezvous (July 2009???)
Reservations at Two Harbors can be had at 310-510-4253 or 4254 and can be paid by credit card.
Take Highway 80 West to the 5 South to the 710 West (unless you prefer the 395 to the 14 to the 5), East on West Ocean Boulevard, Right on Queen's Way, Right on Queensway Drive to the South Shore Launch Ramp. Parking is $10 a night which you pay to a machine, bring crisp bills (the credit card reader was broken when I checked). Southeast under the bridge (watch for sandy shoals) and pass the Queen Mary on your starboard side (note the Russian submarine.) Due South to the passage through the breakwater. Southwest 26 miles to Two Harbors. Row your dink or take the water taxi to the dock, walk 50 feet to the bar and order a Buffalo Milk.
If we are not actually going to Two Harbors I am sure detailed routes from the ramp will be posted. Google Earth is a great resource for a preview. If we are rafting at Catalina (Cat) Harbor be prepared with extra fenders and a rough ride through the Potato Patch as you round the North end of the island and a longer walk for your Buffalo Milk.

Mark,
Welcome!!
This is the loop. Keep watching this thread. As it gets closer to April 17th, details will be firmed up.
We should have a lot of fun. I say, the more the merrier.
