BOAT NAME CHANGE CHRISTiNING

What is the proceedure for changing the name of a boat... Do I call the Shaman, witch doctor or Kink Neptune??? Is it bad luck to change the name with out the christining???? The name of the boat has never been on title.....Please advise......

An article in one of this month's boating rags talks about what is considered bad to do and yes name changing is one of them but then so is bring bannanas aboard a boat???? It didn't say why. I guess it really is up to you and just how supersticious (sp? - I got to get a browser with a spell checker) you are. Bannanas are OK on my boat and although I got it new, I still would have changed the name so as to name it after my wife - she can make bad luck look good

The whole boat naming thing has me thinking. Iv'e got my new boat in the water, but I'm not going to pour champagne on her till my wife comes home to be a part of the ceremony. We have picked out Serendipity as the boats name though. due to the car accident and settlement that paid for her. it seemed only logical.
I dont know if im biting my thumb at the fates by having her in the water without a proper ceremony, but she knows her name, and since shes now a part of our family Im sure she'll take care of me and the boy till mama gets back form the desert, at which time we will go ahead with the ceremony. i wont be breaking any bottle on the bow, but a generous pour will be sure to come.

While not overly superstitious myself and spending 14 years in the Navy, I think it is more tradition and a chance to have a little fun with it. I bought my used with a second gen name of BAM!, the great folks who owned her before me where big Emeril Laggasse fans. I believe that “Somertime” was the original name.

My fiancé (admiral in training) and I have decided on “PollyAnna”, one for our Bassett Polly Anne and hopefully our escapism from the real world along with the philosophical context... . Once I get all my friends gathered up, we plan on going down to the marina and have some fun with the ceremony.

My admiral is always quick to point out that our traditional renaming ceremonies for our previously owned boats in the past has always been the reason we have been so lucky to avoid mishaps on the water... not my superb seamanship and meticulous care .... and I hope she's right just to get my money's worth. I really hated to see that 20 yr. old Scotch poured over the bow and into the lake os it did the trick.

After all is said and done, the name of the boat really doesn't matter, because 99.9% of the time everyone will refer to it as "the boat" or when expenses occur, "your boat".

I wish you the best in renaming your boat. May I offer a suggestion? Ask the boat first, and take it out a few times before you make the change. When we bought our the previous owner had christened her the "Connie Lee". It was a his wife's name, and while it worked for them, we weren't too thrilled. The Capt & I decided we wanted to rename her "SeaDreamer". We talked about it while working on the boat, and even got as far as removing the "Connie Lee" lettering from the sides of the boat. Well, I guess that's about the time she decided we were serious about renaming her, and wanted to make her opinion known. So now, after the incidents we had last summer (motor conking out while motoring the first time we tried to take her out, steering getting cranky so we had to replace it, bunks on the trailer floating away while launching and retrieving, and finally losing reverse while trying to dock - causing us to end up bow first into a concrete wall and losing the bow light and flattening the bow rub rail) I think she's made her point - "Connie Lee" she'll remain. I'll just have to save the fancy SeaDreamer lettering we bought for an eventual upgrade.

I thought we needed a virgin to pee off the stern! That's why I'm stuck with then name I have.

Believe it or not, renaming a boat is part of what makes me lean towards a New Mac instead of a less than new Mac. That's a costly lean. My admiral thinks I'm nuts but then she's rarely out there helping bail out my 'Leaky Loo' which I had renamed from 'Eileen' which had been renamed by a previous owner...

He said he renamed her to Eileen because that's his wife's name and how he sailed--but I'm sure that it's more a description of the boat and how it lists when taking on water. Let me tell you... water ballast isn't so slick when six inches of it is sloshing side to side around your feet..

Even after I get my Mac, I may keep the old Apollo and rename her to 'Stimulus'....I've certainly bailed her out enough!

Hey, after 15 months in this dry dusty desert, there will be no champagne pouring overboard, champagne is for drinking!! I'll bring back some nasty near beer for the boat naming ceremony Her name's Serendipity, so bad luck resulting from a flawed ceremony does not sound like a possibility
