I am lost and need help, anyone?

Post by sailor ja »

I am looking for some people who would like to help me restore my 1973 venture 21 to a sailable status.

I have searched the web and have recieved many brochures and pictures and other sorts of list on the boat but I really need to get some specifics on a few things.

I have no idea how to rig the mast and sails on the boat

I have no idea how the rudder set up goes either.

I don't know if I am missing parts or if I have them all and just can't figure it out.

what specific parts of the boat do I need to sail it? in a list format. and pictures would be very helpful :)

specifically how do I rig the sails, and specifically how do I set up the rudder system?

I would really appreciate any help !

also if there is anyone even with in a couple hundred miles of Richmond VA that has a V21 and is interested in helping me out and letting me come sailing with them or showing me how to rig the boat and what I need to have it sailing that would be awesome and I could possibly trade services such as welding or metal fabrication or automotive services as well, or just plain cash . that would be the greatest of help!

thanks again

Josh,

I just spent the last 3 months rebuilding my '77 V22. While I am a novice myself, we may be able to help each other out.

First tell us about the boat. This will help everyone undersatnd where you are with it. Pictures would be nice.

Next, Where is it? is it on a trailer in your yard or in the water?

You may want to start by cleaning everything out. That is take everything thats not bolted down out of the boat. Once that is done we can put back one thing at a time.

We can't tell you what your missing untill you tell us what you have. Really I would not worry about missing parts at this point. Once you get the boat cleaned out, take some pictures and post. Then we can help you gather what you need to step the mast.

Hey Josh,
Like Pete I rebuilt my boat. Mine is a 1972, V-17, which is pretty much just like yours except 4 feet shorter. You can see my pictures at

I'm willing to answer any questions you have.

Wow, JoeVacs, that was an amazing job you did on that little 17'. Real nice work....you'd never know it was a '72 by looking at it. Seeing pics of your 17' and of Pete's 22' makes my boat look pretty worn out, haha.

Josh, do you think you could post some pictures of all of the stuff that you have? Like Pete said, it would help us out a lot if we knew what stuff you already had.

JoeVacs,

Your boat looks great. I have not even started on the interior of mine yet. If you're ever planing a trip to the coast let me know. We can do some sailing and see which color boat is faster.

I would love to do that. You would beat me though, unless you really goofed somehow. I did outrun a Chrysler 22 last summer though, so you never know.
My sons girlfriend lives in Wilmington, so I'll let you know if I make it down your way.

Thanks for all the replies!

This site has been a great help so far with all of the other questioned I have posted in the past.

The boat is currently in the back yard of my parents house sitting on it's trailer due to the fact I live in an apartment downtown and that I have been away this year on military orders. I am back near Richmond again on Langley Airforce base for a month and I wanted to work on her some more. I will then head back to Richmond to really do some work on it. My parent were gracious enough to purchase a tarp that covers the boat and trailer completely while I am gone.

I started working on this boat Dec. of last year when I bought it and had pulled everything out then. This past weekend I washed the entire boat with a pressure washer and scrubbed it down. This coming weekend I will wax it.

Here are the parts that came with the boat that are for the mechanical purposes (of course a lot of other things came with the boat but they have nothing to do with the function of it):

-Mast
-Boom
-Mainsail
-Jib
-Ropes and steel braided line for the rigging I believe
-two Rudders
-outboard Engine Mount
- all hardware still attached to boat

Things I need to modify are the electrical system (which needs to be completely redone and started from scratch). I also need to mount the proper stern light on the boat as well.

Now from looking at other photos of venture 21's the two boards I have for the rudders look as if they would attach? one has a handle and the is just the board. As far as the rigging goes, I am reading a great book on sailing and am hoping this will give me the incite I need to attempt rigging. Is the V21 rigged universal to other sail boats it's size?

here is a few photo's that I took at the beginning of the year, I will get some more detailed ones this weekend.

Let's remember the 3-picture posting limit, please, folks. Thanks!
The boat is in great shape and the keel was re-painted in 2004 and looks to be in great condition as well.
The boat was garage kept up until the middle of 2008. My friends grandfather died and he had bought it in 1973. The trailer still has the old poly tires on it and to my surprise they are in great shape too.

I will take a photo inventory of the parts for the boat this weekend so everyone can visualize it better.

Kenny, that sounds great I will keep in touch with you. I believe bugs island is on the NC side? I used to go camping there when I was younger!

thanks again for everyones help, it means so much to have some people to turn to when you are frustrated or lost.

Look for more photo's friday or saturday.

Wow Joe! Your boat looks great! you did an amazing Job! Also I like your rudder set up, I have nothing like that, but small rudder boards it seems with a little handle that doesnt extend more than half a foot, was that a mod or did these boats originally come like that? and Pete I see where you live in wilmington. I was born there and used to stay there every summer. I love that area and still have family that lives there.

Josh,

Looks like your boat is in great shape. Should not be to hard to get it setup. Before I started rebuilding my boat I set it up severial times in the yard just to get the hang with it.

Lets start with the rudder as that seams to be in question at this point. Again i am no venture expert but from what i have seen they are all the same, so others may chime in to correct me if I am wrong. The rudder is comprised of two boards hinged in the middle. There are two aluminum plates that make up the hinge. Then at the top of the rudder is the tiller handle which is held on with two aluminum brackets. The tiller handle is about 3 feet long. It sounds like your rudder has been taken apart at the hinge and the tiller may be missing. Take some pictues and let see what you have and what your missing. Sence your into metal fab there is nothing to the rudder that can't be easly fabercated.

Your rudder assembly should look similar to the one in this picture posted by another member:

The material of yours may differ and is probably fiberglass.

Ah yes the rudder does look just like that one. I seem to be missing the aluminum plates that attach the bottom section to the top as well as the brackets that attach the tiller to the rudder. The metal work should be no problem then. Or I could just recreate a whole new rudder. I will still get some pics this weekend

Josh,

The plates are roughly 11 x 6.125 x .25 Aluminum. They are not perfictly square but pretty close. If you want I can measure mine and send you a sketch. Also do you have the hinge pins brackets? There are two of these one top and one lower. These are the pins that attach the rudder to the boat.

Pete,

The measurements and sketches would be great! I also do not have the hinge pins either.
