down with hondas
I hate Honda's, wouldnt own one, woops went to the dealer today to pick up some nic-naks for the new merc mac engine. As Im waiting around, some guy comes in to pick up his boat that was just repaired.
A discussion was going on and being so close I couldnt help but over hear it.
Seems the guy wanted to trade his Honda two hp 3 year old dinghy motor for the repairs he had done on his other boat, worth about 600 bucks. He was short of cash, The owner said look around I have a hundred used motors I cant sell now. Well this motor was like new, they put it in the test tank and even though its been sitting for a year fired up on the first pull. Dealer says to the guy, Ill give you two fifty towards your bill, Thats when I stepped in and said whoa, I might be interested. I asked what he would take for it and it was 300, I paid that towards his bill and off I went with a sweet Honda dinghy motor.
That thing was running, with new gas, at my house for an hour in a trash can without a hick up. I scored.
Love my Honda

OK Mike
That was definitely a non sequitur story.

Hi Mike --
Congrats on a good buy.
Now you've got my curiosity up,
how hot was the water in that trash can after running it for an hour?

Re: down with hondas
Seahouse,
Not hot at all.
The 2hp Honda is an air cooled 4 stroke.
Centrifical clutch to turn the prop above idle, no shifter needed.
Spin it around for reverse.
No water pump.
No muss no fuss.
The only reason to run in water is to keep the "tail pipe"/shaft housing cool from the exhaust.
I paid just more than twice that for my new used one.
Good deal Mike!
It prolly didn't burn more than a few ounces of fuel in that hour.

Re: down with hondas
Get this, Honda says it gets a whopping 103.36 miles per gallon. It runs 55 minutes on one quart of gas at full throttle. for a total of 25.84 miles. The math doesnt work for the miles, but hey Honda says it, not me. weighs 27 pounds. Karen can pull start it on the first pull.
Slap it on the back of the mac and 30 gallons of gas can reach Hawaii!!!! with fuel to spare. Just kidding, but its a neat little engine. Clutch drive, a little past idle engages, so no shifting.
Grey/silver color to match my hair, sometimes, and Like hard crab said, no muss or fuss with water pumps or shifters, let alone mixing the oil with the gas.
I Liked the suz 2.5 I have been eyeing for some time, but this Honda is a very nice sub.
The engine is small enough to carry around (like my 4hp evinrude two stroke) but Im already thinking high performance and duel engine application on my 9.5 foot dinghy??? Lets see 2hp honda plus 4hp evinrude gives me 6 hp, think Ill be able to ski behind the boat????
Im going to a lake up north for 10 days middle of June, Ill take my two dinghy motors and the 9.5 dinghy and play around with them some. By the way, best way to get Karen comfortable using things like the dinghy by herself is on the lake for a few days. All our salt water toys get used there, even the mac went there one year. This gives Karen the confidence to play around with the stuff on a quiet lake before braving the deep blue sea on her own. This is an absolute necessity as when moored at Catalina, waking up at 6 am to shuttle the dogs to shore to potty, isnt my favorite chore, especially with a bit of a hang over. So that will be Karens job to brave the high seas to the dinghy dock at two harbors with two dogs most of the time.
Ill keep an eye out for more deals like this for any one that want to score. This economy lots of people want to dump stuff cheap now. xxxxxxx content redacted xxxxxxxx

aya16,
The real vision would be a cat that not only uses, flushes, but then empties the porta-potty every couple of days!

I have the lectrasan waste potty, and the electric head.
Would be pretty easy to have a cat operated photoelectric switch to finish the task....

I like cats, have had 4 over the years and the nice thing about cats over dogs, you can leave them at home with food in a bowl and water dripping in a sink for 3 to 4 days.

Good lord now you guys are giving me visions of a cat accidentally flushing himself down a porta potty, "can you hear it, meow meow, wheres the cat? I dont know, I hear it but I cant find it", as you tear bulkheads out in the mac looking for it.

Re: down with hondas
I went the other way with a 40 thrust elect. Prowler now on sale at Bass pro (20 lbs) for $130 plus a 330 cca lawn battery Gold (16 lbs from Sears,1 yr guarrenty, $45) to push my new 9.6 Solstice inflatable ($300) .This weight amounts to a little over a Honda 2hp but add fuel it is about equal. Bass also has the 2.5 Merc. for $625 on sale but weighs 42 lbs.
Ran the 3 blade prop motor for a hr. in 55 gal. drum at speed 2 and started out at 12.55 amps and after a hr. sitting for 15 min. it was 12.40 amps.
The motor has 5 forward and two reverse but to much thrust for #3 and thru the water out. I am guessing at 2 it should move the boat with 400 lbs aboard at 3-4 mph and at # 4 speed probably 5-6 mph. I also ran it for 15 min. after the 1 hr @#3 and battery was 12.34 after 15 min. off.
I think this motor will do what I am looking for, it is a fresh water motor but I will change a few bolts to stainless steel and coat the aluminum shaft and all metal parts with a lube.
Will try it out next weekend, the inflatable has a blow up keel and floor and the bow is angled up to prevent bow waves boarding. Stores in a compac. bag you can store on deck or down below.
