Hey outboard mechanics out there. I have a questing for you. I have an older 1980is 6hp Johnson Outboard. Last weekend when I was motoring back to the docks we were cruising along at full throttle and all of sudden the motor RPMs went sky high and I shut it off right away. I thought we though the prop or something but it was still on the motor. I then restarted the motor and shifted both in Forward and Reverse but no prop movenment.
My question: Is there a shear pin in the out-drive gearbox? I haven't been able to tear it apart yet but I wanted to order the new part now while I am on the road so maybe I can fix it this weekend.
Any other Ideas or Advice?
Thanks
Zach

I think you'll find the shear pin through the prop shaft has been sheared. Remove the cotter pin from the prop hub, unscrew the hub, remove the prop and you'll see the now two or three piece shear pin. Avoid the temptation to replace it with anything other than a proper shear pin.

Thanks for the response.
Is this sear pin something easy to fix? I am not going to be back in Florida till Friday, but would love to take my boat out this extended weekend. I looked at a few online exploded views but haven't been able to find the part or part number. I see that Iboats has shear pins by different sizes?

Would this work? If I can figure out the right size I need? Is this something I can get at a hardware store or do I have to order it from Sierra Marine?
Do I need any special tools to pull the prop and or gear apart?
Thanks

Re: 1980 Johnson 6hp Outboard Problem
I had the out drive replaced back in Fall of 08. Payed $500.00 for a used one. Guess that's what I get. I spent way too much on this old motor but I hope I can fix it till I can get a new 4 stroke. It looks like I need what is called a "Drive pin". Cost about 1$. Just hope that's all I need.

Put the motor in gear (not running),
if the prop spins freely, the shear pin
is probably broke. A lot of those older
engines have a small plastic bracket
that holds several spare pins. Look very
closely, they are quite small, sometimes
in the cover, or around the throttle linkage.
