Best transom height for long shaft kicker?

Post by dxg68 »

If for example I purchase long shaft kicker motor then if I understood it right the transom height should be 20 inches. But some people here suggest lowering the kicker deeper to avoid cavitation. Does everybody who installed the kicker motor agree? What transom height (or mounting bracket height) would be ideal for long shaft (20 inches) kicker on Mac?

Thanks!!!

I have a Nissan 9.8 with extra long shaft. Looks to be about 26" from top of motor bracket (transom) to water line. Works great but does come out of water in rough seas and large wakes. If I mounted it any lower the hand control would hit the transom.

I don't know what a kicker is...or what it does! Will you describe it for me please? I have a johnson 6hp, 20" shaft on my :macm: and I have a hard time with it cavitating when I'm in the waves...especailly when I'm backing.

Kicker, in this useage = a small backup motor that can be lowered into the water and used if the "big" motor craps out. Normally mounted on a motor mount to allow it to be lowered into the water when needed or pulled clear of the water when sailing or using the "big" motor.

C130king,

Thanks for the info...I guess its easy to tell I'm a boot :) . I am working on getting me a bigger motor...I'm leaning toward a 70hp ETEC.

When you said you had a 6HP I was hoping that wasn't the only motor you had. I have a 40HP 2-stroke and am very happy with it. I have been on and around a couple of Macs with 4-strokes and I really like the lower sound levels.

Good luck,
Jim
